Marvel Studios Unveils the Next Villain For Tom Holland’s Spider-Man

Marvel Studios has revealed two villains from the Spider-Man: Brand New Day comic series who will appear in the upcoming movie. Even though Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is one of the MCU’s newer heroes, Peter Parker has already battled powerful enemies, including Thanos in the Avengers films and those featured in his Home trilogy. Now, Spider-Man is set to face more villains than ever when he returns in Brand New Day this July. While the main villain hasn’t been announced yet, over a dozen characters will appear as enemies, ranging from common thugs to Mark Ruffalo reprising his role as the Savage Hulk.

Recently released merchandise for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie gave fans their first glimpse of two villains: Boomerang and Tarantula. These characters are the 15th and 16th individual villains confirmed for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films, adding to the antagonists already seen in Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home.

Fred Myers, who goes by the name Boomerang, used to be a professional baseball pitcher. Now, in Marvel Comics, he’s a hired gun known for using deadly boomerangs.

Tarantula is a mercenary from South America named Anton Miguel Rodriguez. He designs his own spider-inspired costume, but doesn’t have any superpowers, unlike Spider-Man.

Marvel’s Spider-Man movies began with a compelling villain: Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton, also known as Vulture. Toomes wasn’t simply evil; he was motivated by wanting to support his family and resented the rich, especially after losing a big work deal to a competitor backed by Tony Stark and Damage Control.

Toomes, the villain Vulture, faced an even worse outcome than imprisonment: he was unexpectedly drawn into Sony’s universe of spin-off villain movies with a post-credits scene in Morbius. This teased a potential team-up with Jared Leto’s Morbius, but that collaboration never materialized.

Vulture’s criminal group used salvaged alien technology to create and sell advanced weapons on the black market. Two members, Jackson Brice and Herman Schultz, both went by the name ‘Shocker’ and were known for their electrically-powered gauntlets, which were inspired by the technology of the Chitauri.

One character was destroyed by the Vulture, but another survived, and actor Bokeem Woodbine believes he might return to the role in future Spider-Man projects.

Phineas Mason, also called the Tinkerer, was the one who mostly built those high-tech weapons. He used to be a scavenger working for Toomes, but he was a talented engineer who could adapt alien technology to make money quickly.

Marvel fans first got a glimpse of Michael Mando as Scorpion nearly nine years ago in the post-credits scene of Homecoming. Now, the Better Call Saul actor will finally play the full role in Brand New Day, escaping from prison and debuting a striking new Scorpion suit in live-action.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Mysterio (really Quentin Beck, a former Stark employee), caused Peter Parker more trouble than any villain Spider-Man had faced before. Mysterio cleverly tricked Spider-Man and the public into believing he was a hero from another universe, but was eventually revealed as an illusion expert determined to take Iron Man’s place.

Mysterio first appeared in Far From Home, claiming that Elementals from another dimension (Earth-833) had arrived through a tear in reality created by the Snap.

As a huge movie fan, it was so cleverly done! Everything we thought was real – like the chaos caused by Hydro-Man in Venice, where he was totally controlling the water – was actually an elaborate illusion. Mysterio and his team used some seriously advanced drone technology to pull it all off, and it tricked Spider-Man into actually believing Quentin Beck was a good guy for a while.

Following him was Molten Man, who controlled fire and was presented as the most powerful of Beck’s Elementals. Beck unleashed Molten Man on Prague, falsely claiming the resulting fire was responsible for his family’s deaths on another Earth – Earth-833.

In Far From Home, Spider-Man battled a holographic version of Cyclone. This and other elemental projections eventually combined in London to create a powerful, artificial enemy resembling the Avengers.

A fourth being with elemental powers emerged, seemingly based on the Sandman, and had control over the Earth, bringing together all four classic elements. However, Spider-Man never fought this Elemental. Instead, Talos and Soren—disguised as Nick Fury and Maria Hill—discovered it while it was attacking a village in Mexico.

Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin wasn’t satisfied with just defeating one Spider-Man. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, he traveled across different universes and even killed Peter Parker’s Aunt May. This devastating event could have lasting consequences for Peter, as rumors suggest the Marvel Cinematic Universe will introduce its own version of Norman Osborn, the man behind the Goblin.

Following in the footsteps of other returning villains in No Way Home, Alfred Molina returned as Otto Octavius, or Doc Ock, from Spider-Man 2. The brilliant scientist struggled with his robotic arms controlling him, but a technological upgrade ultimately restored his control.

Jamie Foxx’s portrayal of Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man was often criticized for being awkward, lacking complexity, and having a simple blue appearance. Thankfully, Marvel Studios addressed these issues in No Way Home, giving Electro a much more engaging personality and a vibrant green-and-yellow look that was truer to the comic books.

Thomas Haden Church played Flint Marko, a crucial character in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, as the man responsible for Uncle Ben’s death. In No Way Home, Sandman’s story picked up where it left off in Spider-Man 3, initially teaming up with Peter Parker before ultimately switching sides to look out for himself and try to get back to his own universe.

Andrew Garfield’s first Spider-Man villain was Dr. Curt Connors, a scientist from Oscorp who desperately wanted to regrow a lost limb. His experiments ultimately transformed him into the Lizard. Luckily, when Garfield’s Spider-Man teamed up with other Spider-People from different universes, they were able to find a cure for Connors before returning to their own worlds.

New reports indicate that the upcoming Brand New Day movie will feature 14 villains. This means Spider-Man’s collection of enemies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will nearly double when the film releases on July 31st.
