A recent report suggests Marvel Studios is planning to bring a magic-based series to Disney+ that was previously considered cancelled. For some time, rumors have circulated about a show based on the popular Strange Academy comics, which would follow young magic users learning from Benedict Wong’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ultimately, the project was cancelled when Marvel decided to shift its focus for future streaming content. News of the cancellation of Strange Academy emerged in 2024, reportedly due to cost-cutting measures at Disney, and it’s currently on indefinite hold.
After being put on hold for over a year, the TV series Strange Academy appears to be moving forward again. Marvel insider Daniel Richtman shared this news on his Patreon page.
A source familiar with the industry said that work on the Strange Academy project is moving forward again, and Marvel Studios is currently looking for a writer to develop it.
Fans were able to watch Strange Academy here, and while we don’t know when the next Doctor Strange movie will be released, this show offers a fun, magical experience for those eager for more Strange content.
The upcoming series Strange Academy will reportedly feature Benedict Wong reprising his role as Wong, who will be teaching a class of students learning magic within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The series is based on the comic book of the same name, which has been published since 2020 and details a school founded by Doctor Strange to train young sorcerers.
Breaking Down the Future of Strange Academy
Although Marvel Studios hasn’t confirmed anything, it wouldn’t be shocking if they decided to adapt the Strange Academy comic series as a new show on Disney+.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited to hear some inside info about what they’re planning after Secret Wars – supposedly around 2028. Apparently, they’re going to focus a lot more on magic, which is fantastic! It feels like the mystical side of the Marvel Universe hasn’t gotten its due, and I’m thrilled they’re finally leaning into it. I’m hoping this means we’ll see things like Strange Academy explored, a new Doctor Strange film, and maybe, just maybe, the Midnight Sons team finally making their big screen debut. It’s a really promising direction!
Beyond 2026, Marvel Studios doesn’t have many new shows planned for Disney+. Currently, VisionQuest is the last new live-action series confirmed, with Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again being the only other live-action streaming project in development.
Marvel Studios will have some upcoming gaps in its streaming content, creating a great opportunity for a series like Strange Academy to be added to the lineup.
As a big Marvel fan, I wouldn’t be shocked if we hear official news about that Doctor Strange spin-off pretty soon. It seems like Marvel Studios is finalizing their plans for what’s coming up, and I think that project could easily fit into the mix.
