Ultron, a key villain in the Avengers movies, was portrayed by a different actor in a recent Marvel project. Many fans consider this new version the best yet, which is unfortunate because James Spader, who originally voiced Ultron, deserved to continue playing the role. It’s a shame the character ended up being featured in what is widely considered the weakest Avengers film.
I don’t think Avengers: Age of Ultron is a bad movie, or even among the worst in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, it’s grown more appreciated over time, as plot points introduced in this film became very important later on. However, it is definitely the least thrilling of the Avengers movies, and that isn’t James Spader’s fault.
James Spader Was Recast As Ultron For The Villain’s Best MCU Version

James Spader was an excellent choice to play Ultron. His performance resulted in some of the most memorable lines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, I think Ultron could have been even more frightening if Marvel had emphasized the horror aspects present in the movie, particularly his initial scene in Avengers Tower. A bit less comedy would have helped too.
I was really let down that the strongest version of Ultron we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe actually appeared in the animated series, What If…? The Disney+ show brought back Ross Marquand to voice Ultron – he’d previously played Red Skull in Avengers: Endgame after Hugo Weaving – and this version of Ultron was his most formidable yet.
Infinity Ultron is a more powerful version of the villain who manages to take control of Vision’s body. This allows him to easily defeat Thanos and, with the added power of the Infinity Stones, become a danger to the entire multiverse. Many fans consider this version of Ultron to be an improvement over the one seen in the Marvel movies.
James Spader’s 2026 Ultron Return Makes Up For His MCU Recasting

Although the Ultron seen in the ‘Infinity’ saga had a stronger storyline than the version from ‘What If…?’, that might shift in 2026. Thanks to the multiverse, Ultron is coming back to live-action, and James Spader will reprise his role. This gives Marvel a chance to address both the previous recasting of the character and the decision to kill Ultron off in the animated series.
James Spader is coming back as Ultron in the upcoming Disney+ series, Vision Quest. He’ll play both the human form of the character and the robotic Ultron that fans are familiar with. The show, starring Paul Bettany as Vision, will also feature other A.I. characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the story is expected to be a compelling mystery potentially focused even more on Ultron than the What If…? series.
