A recent milestone shows that the next DC Universe movie is further along in production than the next Marvel Cinematic Universe film, despite both being scheduled to come out about a month apart. The first DCU film, Superman, will premiere in July 2025, the same month Marvel begins its Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. After these releases, both universes are taking a break from theatrical releases until mid-2026.

DC Studios recently held an advance screening of the upcoming Supergirl movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter (via ScreenTime on X). The screening was shown to a select group of executives and key members of James Gunn’s DCU team. It’s noteworthy that DC Studios shared the film so early, as it isn’t scheduled for theatrical release until June 26, 2025.
The next Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is still being filmed. It’s currently scheduled to come out just a month after Supergirl, with a release date of July 31, 2025.
Filming for Supergirl took place from January 13th to May 10th, 2025. Spider-Man began filming on August 3rd, 2025, and is expected to continue through much of October and November. While an exact end date hasn’t been announced, production will likely finish in November or potentially December. Filming was briefly paused due to an injury to the lead actor, Tom Holland.

Filming for Supergirl was much further ahead of Spider-Man, according to their production timelines. Supergirl finished filming in May, while Spider-Man isn’t expected to be done until November – a difference of six months.
It seems Supergirl isn’t quite finished yet and still needs some final editing and sound mixing. The version shown to executives was likely a preliminary cut. Still, it’s a positive sign that they have a version ready for viewing, even in this early stage.
DC Studios and Marvel Studios approach filmmaking quite differently. James Gunn has emphasized that DC will fully complete and finalize a script before starting any filming. This means no scenes will be shot until the story is locked, preventing on-set rewrites and costly reshoots. The goal is to ensure a cohesive final product by avoiding changes during production.
Unlike some studios, Marvel Studios often starts filming as soon as they can, even if the script isn’t fully ready. This means they might shoot scenes as they’re completed, and occasionally need to revisit and reshoot scenes that have been revised during production.
Many fans have recently criticized Marvel’s filmmaking process. It often appears that Marvel rushes production, leaving insufficient time for post-production teams to polish the films before their release.
Despite a temporary halt in filming due to Tom Holland’s injury, Marvel Studios confirms that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still scheduled to come out on July 31, 2025. Supergirl appears to be on track for its June 25, 2025 release as well. The simultaneous release of these two films shows how differently Marvel and DC approach making movies. Though their methods are quite different, both studios will probably demonstrate that their individual strategies are effective.
Why Supergirl’s Screening News is a Very Good Sign
The early screening of Supergirl to executives is a really positive sign for DC fans. It suggests that James Gunn and the team at DC Studios are very pleased with how the movie is turning out.
Movie studios often show films to select audiences – first private groups, then the public – well in advance of the release date if they believe it will be a success. However, if screenings happen close to the release, it can be a sign that the studio isn’t very confident about the film.
Sometimes movies are shown early to avoid spoilers – if details leak before release, it can ruin the experience for others. However, because only studio executives saw Supergirl, the risk of spoilers wasn’t a major concern.
Gunn and DC Studios are optimistic that Supergirl will be a big success for the new DC Universe. While the movie isn’t scheduled to release for over six months, production is progressing well, meaning we might see trailers and other promotional content relatively soon.
