Marvel has made a subtle change to a key detail from Spider-Man: No Way Home, and its reappearance in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels even more impactful. Although MJ and Ned lost all memory of Peter Parker at the end of No Way Home, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon will be back for the next Spider-Man movie. The first trailer suggests the film will explore what happened with that memory-altering spell.
At the very end of No Way Home, Peter Parker entered the diner carrying a letter – a quick shot revealed it was for MJ.
After the credits finished, a brief glimpse of a note appeared on screen. It contained a message that started with, “Dear MJ, This might sound strange since you don’t know me, but actually, you do.”

This is different than what is said (and shown) in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer.
The lines Peter speaks in the trailer are very similar to what he practiced aloud in No Way Home before going into the diner: “Hi, my name is Peter Parker, and you don’t know me, but you…” This hints that the version of the speech we see in Brand New Day might be the polished, final version.

Considering the brief views of the letter in the Brand New Day trailer, combined with what Peter says in the voice-over, here’s what we believe the complete letter says:
Hello, I’m Peter Parker. You probably don’t recognize me, but I need to tell you something that might seem unbelievable. I’m telling the truth, and I know you’ll believe me because you’re good at knowing when I’m not being honest.
We used to know each other. We were together.
A terrible event was coming, and the only solution was for everyone – even you – to forget I ever existed.
Because I’m not just Peter Parker. I’m Spider-Man.
And sometimes, Spider-Man has to do the hard thing. Even if it breaks Peter Parker’s heart.
I might not ever share these words with you, and perhaps I’m writing them just for myself. It might be my fate to hold onto this truth alone. But the truth is, I love you. And I hope, somewhere within you, you still remember loving me too.
Reading the full account is truly heartbreaking, perhaps even more so than initially realized. Peter doesn’t simply reveal his identity; he explains their shared history. He tells MJ that they were a couple, that a terrible danger was approaching, and that the only solution was to make everyone forget him.

The story’s impact comes from its final moments. Despite all the hardship – the sacrifices, loneliness, and sorrow – Peter doesn’t end his letter with resentment. Instead, he writes, “the truth is I love you. And I hope that deep down, you remember you love me too.”

It’s been four years since Peter chose to keep MJ in the dark about his life as Spider-Man, wanting to protect her from the dangers that come with loving someone who fights crime.
A quick scene in the Brand New Day trailer shows MJ and Ned’s apartment covered in photos and clues related to Spider-Man. It looks like they’re trying to figure out who’s behind the mask – or maybe they’re just big fans!
Even though Doctor Strange made everyone forget Peter Parker, it doesn’t make sense that Ned and MJ wouldn’t still remember meeting Spider-Man at some point.
Despite expectations of a fresh start for the characters, both MJ and Ned will have significant parts in the upcoming movie. There’s even a scene planned featuring a memorable moment between the ex-couple on a rooftop.
Aside from some brief scenes involving Michael Jackson’s disliked new partner, Peter’s romantic life won’t be a significant focus of Brand New Day. The show will continue to explore his longing for his former life, however.
Is Brand New Day’s Canon Intact?
Yes, the minor variations between the two letters from Peter are easily understandable – one was likely a draft, and the other the finished version. Importantly, neither version clashes with what we already know and accept as established lore.
The movie seems to be paying close attention to detail and consistency. Peter’s suit is very similar to the one he wore in No Way Home, but with a few small changes that fit the fact that some time has passed.
The wrist device Bruce Banner uses to control his transformations into the Hulk proves the movie understands each character’s role within the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’ll be interesting to see how the storylines connect moving forward. Specifically, how the events of Brand New Day relate to Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again – especially considering Spider-Man receives a key to the city in the trailer – and how Jon Bernthal’s character will transition from The Punisher: One Last Kill into the wider MCU, are details worth paying attention to.
Michael Mando coming back as Mac Gargan after nine years feels perfect, considering Scorpion was last seen in prison at the end of Homecoming.
