Marvel has announced details about its fifth reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Daredevil: Born Again. This first season kicks off a new run of shows originally made for Netflix, with a second season already planned. In addition to Daredevil, Marvel is also developing a project focusing on another New York-based hero, the Punisher.
Marvel Studios announced that The Punisher: One Last Kill will start streaming on Disney+ on May 12th, just one week after the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again airs.
The new special presentation featuring Jon Bernthal essentially restarts the Punisher story, disregarding previous movies like the 1989 film starring Dolph Lundgren, the 2004 Thomas Jane movie, and the 2008 film Punisher: War Zone. Those earlier films weren’t connected and didn’t share a common universe.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps

After previous attempts to bring the Fantastic Four to life on the big screen fell short, Marvel Studios completely restarted the franchise with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. This new film features a fresh cast, including stars Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby, a unique retro-futuristic style, and a visually striking look inspired by the original comic books and artist Jack Kirby.
The new Fantastic Four movie is a hit with both audiences and critics, earning an impressive 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes – a first for the series and enough to be officially certified fresh. Unlike previous attempts, Marvel is immediately establishing this Fantastic Four as a key team, setting them up to play a major role in future crossover events like Avengers: Doomsday.
The Incredible Hulk

The 2008 film The Incredible Hulk was a fresh start after Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk, which starred Eric Bana. The earlier film didn’t lead to any sequels because it received mixed reactions from both viewers and critics.
As a huge Marvel fan, I always appreciated how The Incredible Hulk, with Edward Norton and Liv Tyler, actually managed to bring the Hulk into what would become the massive MCU – it was the second movie they made! I think rebooting the character like they did was a smart move. It gave us a fresh start and allowed the Hulk to then show up in those amazing team-up films like The Avengers and Thor: Ragnarok – it really set things up perfectly.
Although the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (often called the Infinity Saga) didn’t really acknowledge the film The Incredible Hulk, recent movies and shows in the newer Multiverse Saga – like She-Hulk and Captain America: Brave New World – are starting to connect to it more and more, officially making it part of the larger Marvel story.
Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the third time the Spider-Man story has been retold in a major live-action movie, after the films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
The recent Spider-Man films, a collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, are notable for showing Peter Parker as a teenager, with Tony Stark guiding him, and featuring appearances by the Avengers.
Beyond simply fitting into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, the recent Spider-Man reboot cleverly told a story that honored previous Spider-Man films without undoing the new direction. Spider-Man: No Way Home achieved this by bringing together Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland as Spider-Man.
Daredevil: Born Again

As a huge Daredevil fan, I was a little worried when “Born Again” was announced, thinking it might completely ignore everything we loved from the Netflix series. But thankfully, the showrunners listened to fans! They brought back Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, which is amazing. So, it feels like a continuation of that original story, but also a fresh start for Matt Murdock now that he’s officially part of the MCU. It’s the best of both worlds!
Now that Daredevil: Born Again has done so well, Marvel is likely to use a similar approach when bringing characters like Luke Cage and Iron Fist back into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ll probably follow the same formula that worked for the Netflix-style street-level heroes.
The Punisher: One Last Kill

“The Punisher: One Last Kill” continues the story of Frank Castle (played by Jon Bernthal) from the Netflix series, offering a new, hour-long adventure. It sees the Punisher back on the streets of New York, continuing his fight against crime, and facing off against Ma Gnucci, a powerful crime boss seeking revenge.
In addition to Jon Bernthal reprising his role, Jason M. Moore will also be back as Curtis Hoyle from the Netflix series The Punisher. Hoyle was a key ally to Frank Castle, and in the show, he’s a former Navy medic who now leads a support group for veterans in New York City.
Fans have generally reacted positively to Marvel Studios’ attempts to bring its more grounded, street-level heroes back into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the Netflix Marvel shows were canceled, the studio essentially started fresh with Daredevil: Born Again, bringing back familiar actors and keeping the gritty, down-to-earth feel that fans loved about the original series.
