Before Disney+, the first significant TV show based on the Marvel franchise aired on ABC in 2013 as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, introducing an unexpected plot twist where Clark Gregg’s character Phil Coulson survived his apparent death at the hands of Loki in “The Avengers”, embarking on worldwide missions with a fresh team. Since this series was produced by Marvel Television under Jeph Loeb rather than Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige, there has been debate about its status within the MCU. This ambiguity makes it difficult to determine if characters like Chloe Bennett’s Daisy Johnson (also known as the Inhuman hero Quake) are part of the MCU or not.

To start off, the TV series “Agents of SHIELD” initially adhered strictly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continuity with characters like Nick Fury played by Samuel L. During Dragon Con 2025 (as reported by @dailybennet), Chloe Bennet, known for her role as Quake in Agents of SHIELD, seems to have put an end to a longstanding debate regarding the show’s canonicity. In clear terms, she asserted, “Our storylines aren’t strictly considered part of the main Marvel universe.

The comment was made as she expressed skepticism about rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, stating that “they haven’t reached out to her,” and emphasizing her honesty while expressing her desire for S.H.I.E.L.D. to stage an unexpected return.

Agents of SHIELD’s Complicated MCU Canon May Have an Explanation

Significantly, starting from Season 4, the TV series Agents of SHIELD delved into time travel, which is when most significant narrative clashes occurred within the show’s continuity. It’s plausible that the earlier seasons unfolded on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s main timeline before these post-time travel events led them to an alternate reality branch.

In simpler terms, this implies that the Multiverse Saga might provide an opportunity to reintroduce the character from Agents of SHIELD in a future production, should they decide to do so. However, since the ABC series ended more than five years ago, it’s challenging to think that Marvel Studios would be keen to resume these less familiar storylines, which may not be well-known among casual viewers.

The inclusion of the Inhumans in reviving Quake and the storyline of ‘Agents of SHIELD’ presents a challenge, as Kevin Feige appears keen on minimizing the use of this superhero group. He has even altered Ms. Marvel’s background to transform her from an Inhuman into a mutant.

It appears that, regardless of whether Agents of SHIELD is considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or not, it seems unlikely that the characters from this show will reappear in the MCU. The ongoing storylines could potentially be erased with the rumored soft reboot of Avengers: Secret Wars.

It seems Marvel Studios might strive to prevent any potential confusion when introducing Ghost Rider in the future. While fans witnessed Johnny Blaze passing the role to Robbie Reyes on Agents of SHIELD, many anticipate that Johnny could still appear in upcoming projects, potentially with Ryan Gosling portraying him if plans fall into place.
