As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve been following the buzz around the new Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it’s already got people talking! Some early artwork dropped, and honestly, it’s split the fanbase – especially the new look for one of the villains. We Spider-Man fans are very particular about how our favorite characters translate to the big screen, you know? With the movie coming out on July 31st, everyone’s really eager to see the full trailer and get a better look at what’s in store.
A recent sneak peek at the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day showed off official Marvel Studios character designs, including those for villains like Boomerang, Tarantula, and especially Scorpion. The designs for Spider-Man and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, who is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, were also revealed and have been positively received by fans.

Michael Mando is returning as Mac Gargan in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time since 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. His character was last seen in prison at the end of that film, and now he’s gearing up for a breakout, fully becoming the villain known as the Scorpion – a classic Spider-Man foe.
We’ve seen hints of his change before, but this is the first time he’s been seen wearing the character’s iconic green suit.
The latest promotional images hint that Scorpion’s costume might not be finished. Most notably, he isn’t wearing his signature green mask. Instead, the images show Mando’s face clearly visible, which many fans dislike because Scorpion is usually known for his menacing mask.

The decision to leave out the mask has caused a lot of discussion among fans, with many believing it’s a key part of how the character looks in the comics. Other official pictures showcase Gargan’s updated design, including a clear view of his mechanical tail.

Some fans believe the mask might be able to retract, explaining why it hasn’t appeared in promotional materials so far. This wouldn’t be a new tactic for Marvel Cinematic Universe films or even villains from Spider-Man stories.

In their Spider-Man movies, both Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, and Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, were shown both with and without their iconic helmets.
Despite the initial reveal, opinions on the new Scorpion design are varied. Fans aren’t just disappointed about the lack of a mask, but also have concerns about the look and size of his signature stinger.
The promotional image also shows Scorpion alongside Boomerang and Tarantula, all sporting costumes that closely match their comic book appearances and fully covering their faces. With the release of Brand New Day approaching in July, we’ll likely find out if Scorpion wears a mask. Currently, it’s unknown how Gargan obtains the suit or if he’s teaming up with any other villains.
With the movie’s release just five months away, fans are eagerly awaiting official trailers or footage. There’s a lot of speculation about the film, especially regarding rumors of a large number – over ten – villains appearing in it.
Scorpion’s Spider-Man 4 Role
Okay, so “Brand New Day” picks up Mac Gargan’s story almost a decade after we last saw him in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Remember him? He was locked up and seriously wanted revenge, obsessively trying to figure out who Spider-Man really was. He was grilling Adrian Toomes about it at the end of Homecoming, but Toomes wasn’t giving anything up. This new story seems to be continuing that thread, showing where Gargan’s anger and search have led him all these years.
Gargan has a history of criminal activity, from selling weapons using alien technology to causing the Staten Island Ferry disaster. Because of this, he’s always been a dangerous and unpredictable character in the more grounded stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Let me tell you, Gargan isn’t the only bad guy causing trouble here. The film throws a whole bunch of villains at you – Hulk, Tombstone, Tarantula, Boomerang, and even someone pulling the strings with mind control. Honestly, it made me wonder who was working with whom, and what everyone’s angle was. It’s not a simple ‘good versus evil’ situation, and that complexity is interesting.
This group of villains is sparking rumors about a potential live-action Sinister Six movie, something Sony hinted at after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but never made. Although it’s not officially a Sinister Six project, the character Scorpion could help connect storylines from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
