Marvel Shocks Fans With Sudden Return of Cancelled Legends Series—But There’s a Catch

It appears that Marvel Studios has brought back its “Legends” series following widespread belief among fans that it had been discontinued. From 2021 to 2023, Marvel Studios released two seasons of their “Legends” documentary specials, with each season focusing on a distinct MCU hero linked to a specific Phase 4 and 5, delving into the character’s history within the superhero franchise. After airing 46 episodes, Marvel Studios temporarily halted the format, with the final episode being released in December 2023 alongside Season 2 of “What If…?

To many people’s astonishment, a fresh episode of Marvel Studios: Legends has emerged over 17 months since the last one. Previously believed to be cancelled by Marvel Cinematic Universe’s decision-makers, it appears that this may no longer hold true (for now).

On June 13th, the latest installment of the “Legends” series premiered on Marvel Entertainment’s main YouTube channel, centering around Dominique Thorne’s character, Riri Williams, who is known as Ironheart when wearing her armor.

It’s logical that the new Legends spin-off would be released now, given Thorne’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to be prominent in the upcoming Ironheart series. Yet, it’s puzzling because this specific format has been absent for almost two years, which adds to the mystery surrounding its release.

Currently, the “Riri Williams Legends” episode can only be found on YouTube, and there’s no announcement about it being released on Disney+ at this time. It’s important to mention that the “Legends” series initially aired as a Disney+ production before also appearing on YouTube with the premiere of Season 2 in 2023.

In this case, it appears that this specific episode is only available on YouTube. This addition to the mysterious rollout makes the sudden release even more puzzling.

Besides this, the structure of the latest “Legends” episode is largely similar. Notably, it’s significantly shorter than any other episode in the series, running approximately three and a half minutes. The briefest episode we’ve seen so far has been Mantis’, which was around five minutes.

On June 24th, Tuesday, “Ironheart” will make its debut on Disney+, with each three-episode segment being released one week apart in two batches. As revealed in her Marvel Studios: Legends special, Dominique Thorne’s character dons the title role and is a young genius from Chicago who embarks on a superhero journey after constructing an armor suit reminiscent of Iron Man.

So, Is Marvel Studios: Legends Back?

Despite not being officially terminated by Marvel Studios, Marvel Studios: Legends was considered defunct and seemingly vanished after the release of its second season in 2023. The show’s absence has been noticeable as many significant MCU projects have come and gone without any involvement from its characters.

Therefore, it leaves us baffled that it’s come back so abruptly. Naturally, Marvel aims to excite fans for the upcoming Ironheart series.

It appears that using legends as a means to excite viewers for a show like Ironheart makes sense, given they can familiarize themselves with the Riri Williams storyline so far. However, presenting it in a format that seems reminiscent of something long lost without fanfare about its comeback is indeed peculiar.

As a dedicated movie critic, I must say that the latest release feels like a promising return of the beloved series. The burning question on everyone’s lips is: Will there be more installments in the pipeline? To address this, let me share my speculative thoughts.

Given the current direction and success of the franchise as it approaches the culmination of the Multiverse Saga, it seems plausible that we might witness further expansions. However, whether these will unfold on the silver screen or find a new home on YouTube remains to be seen. Fans eagerly await official announcements regarding the future of this iconic franchise.

If it returns permanently, there are many intriguing characters waiting to be featured under the Legends label. Characters like Daredevil, Val, and Yelena Belova come to mind as prominent MCU figures who haven’t been showcased in Legends yet. Why not take advantage of this opportunity now?
