Marvel says we’ll have to wait a little longer for more Avengers films
Unfortunately for Marvel Cinematic Universe enthusiasts, it appears that the anticipated new “Avengers” film scheduled for release in May of the next year is no longer happening. However, this unexpected change may actually turn out to be advantageous.
As reported by Deadline, the release date for “Avengers: Doomsday” has been shifted from May 1, 2026 to a expected December release in the same year, specifically on the 18th. Likewise, the scheduled launch of “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which was initially set for May 7, 2027, now anticipates an unveiling on December 17, 2027.
I personally believe that Disney and Marvel might have chosen to adjust their release dates for various reasons, even though they haven’t officially disclosed one. Some speculate that the impressive success of movies like Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was also released in December, could potentially play a role in this decision.
Some Star Wars enthusiasts note that shifting Doomsday from its May 2026 schedule allows the film to avoid clashing with The Mandalorian and Grogu, projected to debut in the same month. As the first theatrical Star Wars release since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Doomsday is connected to the widely-acclaimed Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Although two big franchise films have been released in the same month previously, it might be strategically wise to keep them separate, strictly for commercial considerations.
In essence, these “delays” might actually be beneficial since they provide additional time for production to proceed at its own pace. It’s no secret that Marvel’s VFX artists have been overworked for quite some time now, and it appears that the company hasn’t fully recuperated from the constant stream of productions before its 2024 slowdown. While we’re seeing fewer films and shows annually, the question remains: is the quality truly improved? Only future events can give us a definitive answer.
I can identify as a laid-back Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) viewer. I’ve watched the majority of films released in the past five years, and overall, I’ve found quite a bit that I’ve enjoyed. However, I don’t require more than one or even two movies per year. Particularly not when they’re dropped close together like Thunderbolts. I prefer to savor such releases. If we have to wait another year and a half for the next Avengers movie, that works for me – it seems promising for quality. To be frank, when it comes to supposed finales, will anything ever match the greatness of Endgame? But let’s face it, is any finale truly unparalleled?
There’s a group of people who yearn for the days when an MCU film felt like a special occasion instead of simply another superhero flick. It seems I might be part of this crowd. Could you possibly produce fewer MCU movies and make each one exceptional? Of course, I understand the industry doesn’t operate that way, with more leading to more income. But still, it’s nice to imagine a scenario where quality over quantity is prioritized.
