Marvel has officially announced that Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday. A brief preview of Evans in the movie was first shared by directors Joe and Anthony Russo on social media back in December.
They wrote, reflecting on a pivotal character and a shared story that united them: ‘It was inevitable that things would lead back to this.’
Nia DaCosta, director of the 2023 film The Marvels, revealed to Inverse that she was able to visit the set featured in the movie’s teaser trailer, noting that Steve’s return had been planned for a long time – “probably years.”

DaCosta revealed she’d known Chris Evans would reprise his role as Captain America for years, even before her 2025 set visit. She stated, “I knew that Captain America was coming back for probably years.”
The news came as a surprise, especially since many fans thought Chris Evans wouldn’t participate. He told ScreenRant in June that he was disappointed about not being involved. “It’s sad to be away, sad not to be back with the band,” he said, adding that he expected whatever the group created would be amazing, but it would likely be difficult feeling excluded from it.

The actor successfully kept his comeback a secret, but now that it’s been revealed, the Russo brothers have expressed how thrilled they are. In an interview with Empire Magazine (as reported by Comicbook.com), they explained that his importance to the Avengers and the overall story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is deeply meaningful to them, and they feel his role is essential to the narrative.
Although we don’t yet know the details of Steve Rogers’ story, the preview shows him enjoying life as a father. This comes after he reunited with his love, Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell), at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

The last time we saw Steve, he’d finished his final mission: using the Avengers’ time machine to put the Infinity Stones back where they belonged. However, in a touching turn of events, Steve followed advice from his friend Tony Stark and chose to remain in the past, finally getting to live the life he’d always wanted with Peggy.
Back in the present, an older Steve Rogers shared with Sam Wilson that he’d had a wonderful life before passing on his shield and officially naming Sam as the new Captain America. Sam asks about a woman from Steve’s past, but Steve declines to talk about it. The scene then cuts to a flashback of Steve and Peggy reunited, happily slow-dancing together in their home in 1949.
Avengers: Doomsday will land in UK cinemas on 18 December 2026.
