Marvel Movie FLOPS at Box Office, THEN Becomes #1 on Streaming!

A relatively recent Marvel Studios film that underperformed at the cinema has turned out to be the most-watched title on Disney+’s streaming platform. Despite some box office struggles for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in theaters over the past few years, excluding 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, fans have remained loyal to watching MCU films when they become available for home viewing.

In its initial week on Disney+, Marvel Studios’ “Captain America: Brave New World” claimed the number one spot among the most-watched streaming films. Prior to its release, the fourth Captain America film garnered a mix of opinions from critics, making it the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production to fall short financially.

Based on The Hollywood Reporter’s report, “Brave New World” was viewed for a staggering 750 million minutes from May 26 to June 1. This viewership figure is approximately 100 million minutes more than both “The Wild Robot” on Peacock and Netflix combined, and it nearly doubled the 394 million minutes that the 2002 release of “Lilo & Stitch” garnered (the live-action remake of which debuted a week prior on May 23).

Following the underwhelming performance of “Captain America: Brave New World” at the box office, managing to gross only $415 million worldwide, I find myself placed among a select few Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions with disappointing earnings. Interestingly, it ranks just outside the five lowest-grossing films in MCU history, and within the Captain America franchise, the 2011 release of “Captain America: The First Avenger” remains the only film that earned less at the box office.

In my perspective, “Captain America: Brave New World” marks Anthony Mackie’s debut as Sam Wilson/Captain America in a standalone film, featuring Danny Ramirez, Harrison Ford, Carl Lumbly, Giancarlo Esposito, and Tim Blake Nelson. With the Avengers needing rebuilding, Sam encounters some formidable foes such as Sidewinder, the Leader, and President Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk. If you haven’t already, catch “Captain America: Brave New World” on Disney+!

How Important Are Disney+ Viewing Numbers for the MCU?

Watching Captain America 4 excel in its debut week on Disney+ is undeniably heartening for the MCU, considering some recent films didn’t meet box office predictions. Yet, Marvel still needs to put in significant effort to regain their usual success trajectory.

The recently released film titled “Thunderbolts” turned out to be a disappointment at the box office, earning less revenue compared to “Captain America 4,” despite generally favorable opinions from both critics and audiences.

Following up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the upcoming film titled “The Fantastic Four: First Footsteps“. This marks the long-awaited debut of Marvel’s original family within the Marvel Studios narrative for the first time after decades of anticipation. The hype surrounding this movie is immense, as it aims to rejuvenate the MCU. Pre-sales for tickets are already soaring, and the pressure is palpable for characters like Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm in the film itself.

Following this film, Marvel plans to take a one-year hiatus from theater releases, assuming no alterations occur. The upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Fresh Start, is eagerly awaited. Although Marvel might still insert other films into their theatrical lineup during this pause, Fresh Start and eventually Avengers: End of Days are expected to captivate audiences, as the latter brings together various generations of superhero actors for a multiversal showdown against Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom in the MCU.

Currently, I’m crossing my fingers that the triumph of Captain America 4 on Disney+ will ignite a surge of success for Marvel Studios, which they can then harness to generate a wave of optimism for the road ahead.
