Marvel Is Recasting Major MCU Characters, Here Are 7 Heroes Who Should Be Replaced First

As a die-hard Marvel fan, I’m buzzing with anticipation as rumors swirl that some of our beloved MCU characters might get a fresh face! Topping the list are a few iconic heroes, and if these reports are true, the end of the Multiverse Saga is going to shake things up big time.

You see, the comic book saga that inspired “Avengers: Secret Wars” has a knack for resetting the universe to a whole new norm. And with the MCU following suit, we fans can expect a completely revamped reality after being captivated by two decades of epic stories!

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, hinted that some major Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters might be portrayed by fresh faces in the future. Over the course of the Infinity and Multiverse Sagas, Marvel has not shied away from eliminating characters, regardless of their circumstances within the storyline. As we look towards the anticipated “reboot” set to occur in a few years, the multiverse provides an opportunity for new iterations of these heroes to arise.

In a conversation under time constraints, Feige hinted that some present MCU cast members, such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor), might stay on for an extended period. He also expressed gratitude towards actors like Tim Blake Nelson (Samuel Sterns) reprising their roles after lengthy breaks. However, he emphasized not just the likelihood but the inevitability of this occurrence, stating, “‘The X-Men is where that will unfold,’” suggesting the introduction of new actors joining the MCU’s first X-Men film as mutants.

Additionally, he expressed a similar viewpoint during an interview with Variety, drawing comparisons to other film series that have undergone similar recastings. More specifically, he highlighted the ongoing hunt for a new James Bond character and mentioned David Corenswet taking over from Henry Cavill as Superman in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Amy Pascal and David Heyman are currently on the hunt for a fresh James Bond. David Corenswet, the latest Superman, truly impressed us. He consistently leaves a lasting impact.

Given these circumstances, Feige recognized that it can be quite challenging to recast characters, especially when they’ve delivered outstanding performances, a scenario frequently encountered within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s quite challenging for anyone to step into the shoes of an actor who delivered an exceptional performance, like Sean Connery as James Bond. Can anyone truly fill that role again? Isn’t it so?

Here are the seven characters that are strong candidates for recasting within the Marvel Cinematic Universe once the Multiverse Saga concludes:

1. Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
2. Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man
3. Chris Evans as Captain America
4. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
5. Mark Ruffalo as Hulk
6. Chris Hemsworth as Thor
7. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

These characters have played significant roles in the MCU and their recasting might occur if these actors decide to retire or move on from their respective roles after the Multiverse Saga concludes.

7 MCU Characters Who May Be Recast

Tony Stark

Robert Downey Jr. started off the Marvel Cinematic Universe by playing the leading role in Iron Man, which came out in 2008. Over the next 11 years, he played Tony Stark in a total of 10 Marvel Studios movies, and his portrayal significantly boosted the popularity of this B-list Marvel character to become a well-known figure across all entertainment. Downey was the recognizable symbol of the MCU until Avengers: Endgame in 2019.

Sadly, the movie “Endgame” marked the final chapter for Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark, as his character, Iron Man, met a dramatic end when he snapped his fingers adorned with an Infinity Stone to vanquish Thanos and his forces. Although Downey will reappear in the MCU as Doctor Doom in “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”, many fans are still left with a sense of Tony Stark-shaped emptiness in the storyline.

Discussions suggest several potential candidates for playing Tony in the upcoming role, including Ansel Elgort, Finn Wolfhard, Joe Keery, and Logan Lerman, who is recognized as the first actor to portray Percy Jackson on screen.

Steve Rogers

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at Chris Evans’ eight-year tenure with Marvel Studios, where he truly shone as Steve Rogers/Captain America. From three standalone movies to four Avengers films (and more cameos here and there), Evans’ Captain America was the heart and soul of the team across various chapters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s captivating narrative.

In the latest instalment, it appeared that Endgame marked the final collaboration between Evans and Downey, as Captain America stepped into an alternate timeline, living out his days with Peggy Carter and handing over the mantle and shield to Falcon (Sam Wilson). Although there are whispers of Evans reappearing in Avengers: Doomsday, fans eagerly anticipate more thrilling encounters between Steve Rogers, Falcon, and the rest of the Avengers.

As a passionate cinephile, I’ve been following the buzz about potential candidates for a possible Steve Rogers recast, and one name that keeps popping up is Glen Powell, who’s made quite an impact with his performances in blockbusters like Twisters and others. There are also some exciting younger talents in contention, such as Dacre Montgomery from Stranger Things, and Lucas Till, known for his role in X-Men: First Class.

T’Challa

Over a thrilling three-year spell, Chadwick Boseman played the roles of Wakanda’s monarch and the Black Panther, T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Starting with his introduction in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, he starred in the standalone film Black Panther, making a total of four appearances for Marvel Studios, culminating with the Infinity Saga’s final two instalments of the Avengers series.

Sadly, throughout his time with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Chadwick Boseman fought against colon cancer and passed away in August 2021 at only 43 years old. Consequently, his character was eliminated from the MCU in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” However, ever since Boseman’s passing, fans of the MCU have been fervently hoping for his return through interdimensional portals.

In June 2025, Damson Idris, a well-known F1 racer, subtly suggested that he might be in contention for the role of T’Challa (find out more about what he specifically mentioned). Additionally, Aldis Hodge from Black Adam and John David Washington from Tenet are also being considered as strong possibilities.

Natasha Romanoff

Scarlett Johansson made a powerful debut as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, the SHIELD agent and super-spy, in “Iron Man 2” in 2010. She solidified her role among the initial six Avengers during Phase 1 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in a total of 10 films until her self-titled movie, “Black Widow,” in 2021. This impressive body of work earned Johansson the title of the highest-grossing actor ever (as of 2025).

In the epic battle of Avengers: Endgame, I found myself among the fallen, as Scarlett Johansson’s powerful character made a selfless sacrifice to secure the Soul Stone. Despite my 11-year journey within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans felt that there was so much more potential left untapped for such an influential female heroine, given that I only had one solo movie to showcase my abilities and story.

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the prospect of three exceptional actresses stepping into the shoes of Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow. Emma Mackey from ‘Sex Education’ and Anya Taylor-Joy from ‘Furiosa’ have emerged as popular choices for this iconic role, while the talented Millie Bobby Brown from ‘Stranger Things’ has sparked excitement among fans who envision her in a superhero role.

Hank Pym

Michael Douglas played Hank Pym, the brilliant scientist and original Ant-Man, in four instances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He starred in all three Ant-Man films created by Marvel Studios, as well as Avengers: Endgame. Known for inventing the Ant-Man suit and the Pym Particles that power it, he aided Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne on their journeys within the Ant-Man trilogy produced by the MCU.

As a diehard movie buff, I’ve been eagerly anticipating any news about the next chapter in the Ant-Man saga. With Michael Douglas recently announcing his retirement from acting, he expressed a hope that if Marvel were to create an Ant-Man 4, they would write off Hank Pym – a wish I wholeheartedly share. Given Douglas’s role as Hank Pym and the fact that we never got to witness the full potential of this character in the Ant-Man suit, fans like myself are eager to see Marvel Studios explore this unique take on the hero, beyond Scott Lang’s storyline.

Discussions among fans have suggested Penn Badgley, who was previously considered for the role of Reed Richards, might be suitable to portray a younger Ant-Man. Similarly, Dev Patel from “Monkey Man” has frequently been mentioned as a potential contender for other hero roles.

Janet Van Dyne

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been fortunate enough to witness Michelle Pfeiffer grace the Marvel Cinematic Universe in just three films – among them, the epic finale of the Avengers saga. With her exceptional talent, she breathed life into Janet Van Dyne, the original Wasp. The captivating tale of Scott, Hank, and Hope Van Dyne’s discovery of her in the Quantum Realm unfolded in “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” and it was further enriched in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” In these incredible adventures, she stood shoulder to shoulder with the team, playing a crucial role in our triumph over the formidable Kang the Conqueror.

Just like Douglas’ Hank Pym, Pfeiffer’s Janet Van Dyne survived Ant-Man 3 and returned safely to her loved ones following their escapade in the Quantum Realm. Yet, given that Janet is the inaugural Wasp in Marvel Comics, there’s a strong desire to explore the tales she could spearhead. This curiosity intensifies significantly considering she was one of the original Avengers in the comics.

Among the popular suggestions for actors who might embody Janet Van Dyne, Ella Purnell from “Fallout” and Emma Stone, previously known for her role as Gwen Stacy, are frequently mentioned by fans. More recently, Margaret Qualley has also been a topic of discussion, with rumors that she is being considered for the role of Jean Grey in the X-Men series as well.

Quicksilver

Among all the individuals on this list, Aaron Taylor-Johnson has spent the least amount of time, appearing just twice within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He portrayed Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (during the post-credits scene) and again in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” As the swift, silver-haired character, Taylor-Johnson delivered several exciting and amusing scenes alongside the Avengers, particularly during their battles against Ultron in Sokovia.

Unfortunately, Quicksilver’s brilliant turn in the MCU was cut tragically short when Ultron took his life in Sokovia, as he valiantly defended Hawkeye and a young girl. Given the significant spotlight Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch has received over the past decade, the absence of Pietro feels like a squandered chance for Marvel to explore their relationship further.

It’s been speculated that the upcoming Quicksilver role might go to a younger actor, such as Rudy Pankow from Outer Banks and Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things, or even Dominic Sessa from The Holdovers.
