Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born Again season 2, episode 2-3
The Star Wars series Andor is widely praised for its realistic and politically complex storytelling, attracting viewers who might not typically watch Star Wars. Now, a new Marvel show is taking a similar approach, offering thought-provoking parallels to real-world political issues with the same unflinching honesty.
I was completely blown away by both seasons of Andor. It wasn’t just a great Star Wars show; it really held a mirror up to the kinds of oppressive systems we see in the real world, and it didn’t shy away from showing just how much it costs to actually fight back. Now, it feels like Marvel is finally giving us something similar with Daredevil: Born Again, and they’re already well into its second season. It’s exciting to see a show that feels this grounded and tackles complex themes.
Both the first season of Andor and Daredevil: Born Again sparked conversation and debate due to their connections to real-world issues. However, the latest episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 are taking this even further, similar to what happened with Andor’s second season. While neither show intentionally set out to be a political commentary, they’ve become one, particularly with the recent episodes 2-3 of Daredevil: Born Again, now available on Disney+.
The Real-Life Parallels In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Are Impossible To Miss
Right from the start, the Daredevil: Born Again series has focused on stories involving politics and power. The first season began with Wilson Fisk, a notorious crime boss known as The Kingpin, surprisingly winning the election for mayor of New York City, even with his long history of crime and corruption.
Let’s talk about the season finale – things took a seriously dark turn. Mayor Fisk didn’t just win, he completely consolidated power. By the end, he’d systematically eliminated his political rivals and imposed martial law on New York City. And the tool he used to do it? A new task force, the AVTF, specifically designed to crack down on vigilantes. What’s truly chilling is the level of authority he gave them. They operate with complete immunity, answer to only Fisk, and can bring anyone in suspected of vigilantism – or even helping a vigilante – without needing proper evidence or due process. It’s a frightening display of unchecked power, and it sets the stage for a really tense next season.
Now that season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again has begun, many viewers are noticing strong similarities between the show’s storylines and the actions of former US President Trump and his Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.
The AVTF is detaining people suspected of vigilantism, often with little reason and limited proof, and holding them in crowded cages within Mayor Fisk’s Red Hood free port instead of following standard legal procedures. This situation in Daredevil: Born Again, under Mayor Fisk’s leadership, closely resembles the actions of ICE in locations like Missouri, mirroring real-world tactics seen over recent months.
As a big MCU fan, I’ve noticed a really interesting parallel. The way the AVTF operates – it’s clearly about instilling fear and maintaining control, and honestly, it reminds me a lot of real-world ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). It’s not even trying to hide the connection, and it became super obvious to me while watching episodes 2 and 3 of Daredevil: Born Again. They really lean into that dynamic, and it’s pretty striking.
Just Like Andor Season 2, The Real-Life Parallels Were Not By Design
It’s important to understand that the striking similarities between the show and current news events weren’t planned. Marvel Studios has confirmed that the story for Daredevil: Born Again was finished before recent events and the increased presence of ICE agents in the US happened.
You know, it’s funny thinking about how long ago those original comics with Kingpin as mayor were written. It really puts things in perspective. I was reading an interview with Marvel TV’s Brad Winderbaum in Variety, and he said something that stuck with me. He basically explained that any connection between Marvel stories and real-world events is just a coincidence, but that Stan Lee always believed Marvel held a mirror up to the world. It’s like these stories take on a life of their own and end up feeling relevant even years later.
Although the storylines in Daredevil: Born Again don’t directly reflect real-world events, the show is still resonating with audiences and has been acknowledged by those involved, including actor Matthew Lillard, who plays the new Marvel character Mr. Charles, as he shared in a recent Variety interview.
It’s amazing to work on a project that captures what’s happening in the world today. I hope it inspires people to stand up for what’s right and fight against the difficulties many are facing in America.
A similar situation occurred last year with season 2 of Andor. Before Andor, Star Wars hadn’t really shown the Galactic Empire as a truly developed, realistic, and oppressive authoritarian system. By expanding on what George Lucas originally presented—which was inspired by the Vietnam War—Andor unexpectedly drew parallels to the real-world systems of control and fascism we are currently seeing in the United States.
The stories in Andor were actually written by showrunner Tony Gilroy before the recent election. However, the show’s powerful themes of truth being suppressed and the erosion of objective reality under increasing control and oppression resonated strongly with viewers when the second season aired last year, feeling surprisingly relevant to current events.
Both Andor and Daredevil: Born Again explore themes of oppression, rebellion, and how societies are controlled – themes that sadly mirror what’s happening in the world today. This connection to current events wasn’t necessarily intentional for either show, but it’s made them particularly powerful and relevant.
Despite this, both shows deeply resonate with viewers, making them powerfully moving and engaging examples of modern entertainment. They contribute to important discussions and hopefully encourage audiences to think critically and find inspiration while confronting difficult truths about the world today.
New episodes of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release Tuesday nights on Disney+.
