Marvel fans, did you spot this Avengers reunion in The Electric State?
After receiving some negative criticism prior to its launch, “The Electric State” is now available for streaming on Netflix.
Over the weekend, you’ll find out if it’s worth a look, as it includes a reunion of the Avengers directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, with Chris Pratt – an actor they worked with in their blockbuster movies, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”.
You may not be aware, but there is another Marvel Cinematic Universe reunion lurking in the open, and Chris Pratt is part of it too. In this storyline, he portrays a less-than-reputable smuggler named Keats, who lends assistance to Michelle (played by Millie Bobby Brown) as she embarks on her mission to locate her brother.
In Keat’s world, there’s a robot buddy named Herman who crackles with wit. Although Anthony Mackie’s voice might not sound familiar at first due to its pitch, it’s Herman who speaks, courtesy of Anthony Mackie.
In both “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” Mackie acted alongside Pratt – a continuation of their Avengers collaboration in the novel “The Electric State.” Yet, it’s not surprising that Mackie didn’t share the film set with Pratt during the production of the Netflix movie.
Instead, it was Martin Klebba who portrayed Herman on set. Martin has worked with Pratt before, specifically in “Jurassic World”. He may also be familiar to you from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series, where he played Marty in four out of the five films.
In the game of movies, I saw Anthony Mackie breathe life into the character Herman in a way that left me spellbound. However, it wasn’t until after the cameras stopped rolling that he stepped up to the mic and recorded his lines – part of the behind-the-scenes magic known as postproduction.
During filming, much of the banter between Keats and Herman was a mix of improvisation with Joe Russo and Marty Klebba, who brought Herman to life through motion capture… He’s incredibly funny and I adore him immensely.
In addition to the well-known characters portrayed as robots within “The Electric State”, there are several others who play significant roles. One of these characters is Cosmo, who sets Michelle on her journey by suggesting he knows the true location of her missing brother.
Although Cosmo may not initially seem familiar, it’s important to note that he is voiced by the esteemed Disney actor Alan Tudyk. Since 2012, Tudyk has lent his voice to every Disney animation, with roles in movies such as Frozen, Zootopia, and Big Hero 6.
Just as Herman, Cosmo was animated on set with the help of motion capture actors Devyn Dalton and Phoenix Notary. “It’s effortless to build a connection like that when you have such a talented mo-cap actor like Devyn,” Brown stated to Tudum.
Previously, we had collaborated when I was nine, working on a Canadian project together. Over time, our partnership evolved into something resembling a strong sisterhood. We shared a unique bond and connection that deepened with time. Her talent is astounding and it consistently stirred up deep emotions within me.
Regarding the other significant robot characters joining Michelle to defeat Sentre, you’ll spot the well-known figures who gave them their life in this adventure.
In this scenario, the robot character known as Mr. Peanut is given voice by Woody Harrelson, while Terry Notary serves as the motion capture artist for him. Interestingly, the same motion capture artist, Terry Notary, was also responsible for the motion capturing of Pop Fly, a character whose voice is provided by Brian Cox (the actor, not the scientist).
In the story “The Electric State”, the characters voiced by other robots include Jenny Slate as the voice for the postal-robot, Penny Pal, and Hank Azaria lending his voice to the magical-robot, Perplexo.
Or:
In the novel “The Electric State”, we find Jenny Slate providing the voice for a mail carrier robot named Penny Pal, while magician robot Perplexo is voiced by Hank Azaria.
The robots were played on set by Gabrielle Maiden and Christopher Silverstri, respectively.
The Electric State is now available to watch on Netflix.
