Marvel Delays Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars to Ensure Epic Quality
It appears that Marvel Studios has postponed the releases of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”. Despite the fact that the film “Thunderbolts” could be considered an Avengers movie in disguise, it hasn’t been released yet. The upcoming Avengers films are expected to introduce characters from Fox’s original X-Men series, have the Fantastic Four joining forces with the Avengers, and feature Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Doctor Doom. Unfortunately, fans will need to wait a bit longer for these highly anticipated movies, as both projects have now experienced delays.
I’m thrilled to share that Marvel Studios has moved back the release dates for two of their highly anticipated Avengers films. Originally slated for May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will now hit theaters on December 18, 2026, and December 17, 2027, respectively. This shift in schedule is due to the recent commencement of production for these epic productions.
Recently, Marvel unveiled an exciting online event revealing the star-studded cast for “Avengers: Doomsday,” with filming now underway. Snaps from the set depict the wreckage left behind after a fierce battle between the X-Men and Sentinels, hinting at an action-packed adventure ahead!
Changes to the release schedule of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) weren’t limited to delays in The Avengers movie. In fact, Disney has eliminated a scheduled “Untitled Marvel” film for February 2026. Furthermore, the dates previously assigned to Marvel films on November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027, have been reassigned as slots for “Untitled Disney” movies instead. However, Marvel Studios still holds three dates for unspecified films in 2028: February 18th, May 5th, and November 10th.
What Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars’ Delays Mean
The MCU Is Making Some Big Changes To How It Develops Projects
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) journey during the Multiverse Saga has faced some turbulence. With the advent of Disney+, Marvel Studios accelerated their project releases, encompassing films, TV series, special presentations, and more within the MCU. Consequently, several projects fell short at the box office or failed to resonate with critics and audiences alike. However, Marvel has taken steps to address these problems, scaling back on the annual release of movies and shows, as well as extending the development timelines for each project.
The filming for “Avengers: Doomsday” commenced in April 2025, with a planned production duration of six months. This would have left little room for VFX artists if the movie was to stick to its initial release date in May 2026. However, due to delays in the releases of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars”, Marvel Studios has opted for more time to ensure their visually-intensive films meet the required quality standards. This additional time also allows Marvel to finalize contracts with actors like Tom Holland from “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and Hugh Jackman, who plays Wolverine, yet to be officially announced for “Avengers: Doomsday”.
Our Take On Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars’ Delays
The MCU’s Biggest Events Have Been Pushed Back For Good Reasons
I’m torn about the postponements. While I’m disheartened since we haven’t had a new Avengers movie since Endgame in 2019 and now must wait even longer for Avengers: Doomsday, it seems like this is beneficial. I yearn for the next Avengers films to be as grandiose as they deserve, and if Marvel requires additional time to get them just right, then it’s worth the wait. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars need to be the flawless culmination of an occasionally inconsistent storyline, and these delays may assist in reaching that goal.
