Marvel Debunks Tony Stark Variant Rumor About Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom
The filmmakers responsible for “Avengers: Doomsday” recently refuted a popular theory about Robert Downey Jr.’s character Doctor Doom in a recent update. In July 2024, Marvel Studios astonished the cultural sphere by announcing that Downey Jr. would star as the antagonist of “Avengers 5”, portraying the Fantastic Four’s nemesis. With his extensive MCU background as the deceased Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, numerous imaginative fan theories have emerged regarding the new Doctor Doom and how he ties to the former Avenger.
Starting in April, Marvel Studios commenced filming Avengers: Doomsday. At this point, the Russo Brothers posted on Instagram an image of Robert Downey Jr.’s chair marked “Victor von Doom.” This suggests that the directing duo may have disproven a well-known theory regarding Doctor Doom’s origin within the MCU.
Since it was revealed that Downey Jr. would portray Doctor Doom in the MCU, numerous speculations and unverified whispers suggested he might embody a variant of Tony Stark, assuming the role of the Fantastic Four’s nemesis.
Contrary to reports suggesting that the star of Iron Man will indeed be Victor von Doom, it appears that this is not accurate as he is typically the one hiding behind the Doctor Doom persona.
Previously, the Russos had hinted that Downey Jr. would embody the iconic character of Doctor Doom when his casting was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con in 2024, stating on stage that he was “the one person who could pull off Victor von Doom.
On May 1, 2026, Robert Downey Jr. will first appear as Doctor Doom in the movie “Avengers: Doomsday”. His storyline will then continue in “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which is set for release on May 6, 2027.
In the upcoming Avengers film, a seasoned Marvel Cinematic Universe actor will join forces with both established and fresh Marvel figures like Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Florence Pugh (learn more about the confirmed and speculated cast for Avengers 5)).
How Will Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Connect to Iron Man
It’s clear that having Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom resemble the MCU’s Tony Stark in Avengers: Doomsday will be a significant detail. Seeing their adversary who looks like their late comrade is bound to tug at the Avengers’ heartstrings, and maybe Doom might exploit that for his own benefit.
However, it appears that the MCU’s Doom being a variant of Tony Stark is rather improbable at this point. Instead, it might be more fitting to compare this scenario to Chris Evans’ roles as both Human Torch and Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although they were separate characters, neither directly linked, they both made appearances within MCU projects.
Some fans might feel let down that one of Marvel’s most renowned villains is expected to have ties with Iron Man in his anticipated live-action portrayal. However, there’s a glimmer of optimism for the future, as a recent buzz suggests that Downey Jr. could take on the role of Doctor Doom post-Avengers 5.
To date, fans have caught just a small peek of Downey Jr. on the set of Doomsday, without any revelations about his MCU costume or insights into the storyline. It’s likely that such details will stay under wraps until closer to Avengers 5. However, there might be further disclosures at San Diego Comic-Con in July, as Marvel Studios is expected to attend.
