Marvel Confirms Rocket Raccoon Anniversary Special One-Shot

Great news for fans of Guardians of the Galaxy! Rocket Raccoon will be returning for another adventure.

Marvel Comics has announced that a special one-shot comic celebrating Rocket Raccoon’s 50th anniversary will be released this July. Titled ROCKET RACCOON: ROCKET REWIND, the comic promises to show that even small heroes can do big things, according to a recent press release.

Marvel Comics is giving fans a special one-shot comic starring Rocket! Get ready for exciting, action-packed adventures in three brand-new stories, crafted by a fantastic team of writers and artists including J.M. DeMatteis, Christos Gage, MacKenzie Cadenhead, Shawn McManus, Todd Nauck, and Enid Balám. The issue will also feature Rocket’s very first appearance, originally created by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen.

The first issue of Rocket Raccoon: Rocket Rewind brings together several stories focused on the popular character. Marvel Comics has provided brief descriptions of each story to give readers a preview of what to expect.

  • Rocket Raccoon encounters a mysterious galactic book collector before coming face-to-face with the one-and-only Rocky Raccoon (wait, what?!) in a brain-bending tale from writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Shawn McManus.
  • In “BoomShakaLaka,” MacKenzie Cadenhead and Enid Balám take Rocket to a paradise planet full of good vibes and an immensely powerful artifact that’s just begging to be stolen by a cybernetically enhanced creature with a bad attitude. Know anybody like that?
  • Christos Gage and Todd Nauck set out to prove that size does matter in “The Fight in the Raccoon,” featuring an odd-couple team-up of Hank Pym and Rocket as they fight back a massive invasion force in Sub-Atomica!
  • Plus, the original debut of Rocket by Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen!

This special issue is a treat for Rocket Raccoon fans, collecting brand-new stories that showcase his exciting and spirited history, according to editor Mark Pannicia. It even features Rocket’s very first appearance! Believe it or not, back then he was called Rocky and spoke with a British accent, in a story by comic legends Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen. It’s a wonderfully quirky and entertaining piece of Marvel history!

Rocket, first appearing in Marvel Preview #7 created by Mantlo and Giffen, has become a vital character in the Marvel universe, particularly as a central member and emotional core of many different Guardians of the Galaxy teams.
