Marvel confirms an end is near for the MCU franchise

As a seasoned gamer and avid Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of many fictional universes, I can confidently say that the Multiverse Saga has been nothing short of breathtaking. It’s like being on a rollercoaster ride through time and space, with each twist and turn more exhilarating than the last. But like all good things, it seems to be coming to an end with Avengers: Secret Wars.

For almost two decades, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a dominant force in Hollywood. The journey started with the blockbuster film “Iron Man” in 2008, which was remarkable on its own. However, it transformed into something so enormously influential that even the most farsighted couldn’t have foreseen the box office triumphs Marvel Studios would eventually conquer. This was unparalleled, yet achievable – only by Marvel.

As a dedicated gamer of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, I can confidently say that The Avengers revolutionized the franchise, raking in billions and setting new benchmarks for superhero films. In time, even surpassing these achievements multiple times, the MCU continued to soar. However, an epoch came to a close when Avengers: Endgame, momentarily claiming the title of highest-grossing movie ever, brought an end to the Infinity Saga, wrapping up the 11-year narrative of the franchise. Subsequently, the Multiverse Saga commenced.

Now, it appears that the end is nigh for it too.

Marvel confirms the Multiverse Saga will end after Avengers: Secret Wars

In a recent conversation with Screen Rant, Marvel Studios’ chief of television, streaming, and animation, Brad Winderbaum, discussed the Multiverse Saga, its upcoming installments, and whether it would conclude after the 2027 release of “Avengers: Secret Wars.” Winderbaum seems to have hinted that the Multiverse Saga will indeed culminate with a significant title, as many fans had speculated.

He even referred to it as an “amazing culmination” to the MCU’s current saga, saying:

I think that’s [what] Secret Wars is going to be an amazing culmination to the saga. I think it’s going to make the journey feel like it was a worthwhile.

Supporters speculate that the Multiverse Saga could conclude with “Avengers: Secret Wars,” since it’s one of two significant Avengers films (the other being “Avengers: Doomsday”) set to release within a year of each other, much like how we had “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” which marked the end of the Infinity Saga.

The uncertainty surrounding that theory arises because several projects initially labeled as part of the Multiverse Saga haven’t been released yet, despite early confirmations. There have been whispers of cancellations, but with the anticipated release of Avengers: Secret Wars looming, it seems these remaining projects will now likely hit theaters post-Secret Wars, causing speculation among fans as to whether the saga will continue or if these projects are instead part of the next one.

To put it simply, every era comes to an end eventually, as we’ve witnessed with Marvel too, and the Infinity Saga was truly iconic, leaving an indelible mark on the MCU that will last forever. However, the story didn’t stop there; a new chapter began after the Infinity Saga. The same can be expected when the Multiverse Saga concludes – the story will continue.

The Mutants Saga might be the MCU’s next chapter

In terms of potential directions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) beyond the Multiverse Saga, it seems we may have a clue already in place. Although this current phase has undergone significant transformations within the MCU, one less obvious narrative thread that has been gradually developed is the growing inclination towards integrating mutants into the storyline.

Over the last few years, there have been several hints and allusions to both mutants and X-Men in movies like Ms. Marvel and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as well as the comeback of actors from previous X-Men films. These subtleties may not be immediately obvious, but they have been persistent, leaving fans on the edge of their seats, much like a certain Leonardo DiCaprio meme where people are pointing at the screen.

In an interview with The Playlist, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige hinted at a possible shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) towards a focus on mutants, implying that we might soon enter what is known as the “Mutants Era.

“…now that we have characters from the ‘X-Men’ world, the Mutants—we haven’t had access to before… So, this is the beginning of that, and every [movie] post ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be the Mutant era coming into the MCU.”

Indeed, the movie “Deadpool and Wolverine” marked a significant step in bringing mutants permanently into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although it was the 34th film in the series, it also concluded Fox’s X-Men film franchise, which had made the X-Men household names on the big screen. With this finale, the MCU officially recognized the X-Men as a distinct group (setting aside earlier Easter Eggs).

As the Multiverse Saga encountered its share of highs and lows while trying to shape the Marvel Cinematic Universe narrative following the retirement of several major Avengers after “Avengers: Endgame”, it seems sensible to shift focus towards the X-Men in the future. Similar to the Avengers, they are highly esteemed among Marvel’s superheroes, so introducing new cinematic powerhouses to carry on from their predecessors appears to be a logical move for progression.

Regardless of what lies ahead for the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-the Multiverse Saga, it promises to shine even brighter – particularly if mutants become an integral part of its storytelling.
