Marvel Boss Finally Reveals Why Robert Downey Jr. Was Recast as Doctor Doom

I was so surprised to hear about Robert Downey Jr. potentially playing Doctor Doom! Apparently, Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios felt it was the right move. He mentioned that Downey Jr.’s recent amazing performances really stood out, and with the whole multiverse thing going on in the MCU, it opened up a fantastic opportunity to reimagine the character and bring him in. It’s a bold choice, but I think it could be brilliant!

Why Robert Downey Jr. was recast for Avengers: Doomsday revealed

Kevin Feige explained that Marvel Studios stayed in regular contact with Robert Downey Jr. ever since his time as Iron Man ended. He told Entertainment Weekly that despite Downey Jr.’s character, Tony Stark/Iron Man, dying in Avengers: Endgame after more than ten years in the role, they often discussed the possibility of him returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige emphasized Downey Jr.’s significant and lasting impact on the MCU.

The idea to have Robert Downey Jr. play Doctor Doom started about three and a half years ago, and it was a deliberate, imaginative choice. As Marvel Studios began planning to introduce Victor Von Doom to the big screen, they noticed Downey Jr.’s career was experiencing a resurgence. According to Feige, Downey Jr. was gaining awards recognition, including an Academy Award for Oppenheimer, and was being called one of the best actors, so they decided to pursue him for the role.

The studio fully explored the endless possibilities of the multiverse. As Feige explained, “This is our universe, and because it’s a multiverse, we have complete creative freedom.” They decided to cast the actor who famously played their most beloved hero as their most iconic villain.

Doctor Doom is the new villain in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the film brings together heroes from across three different universes and will be released in theaters on December 18th.
