Marvel boss explains Robert Downey Jr’s MCU return: “We can do whatever the heck we want”

Marvel spoilers follow.

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has revealed that Robert Downey Jr. will be back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’ll be playing the main villain, Victor von Doom – also known as Doctor Doom – in the upcoming Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars.

Robert Downey Jr. last played Tony Stark in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, where his character died. But after five years away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was surprisingly announced that he’ll be returning – this time as a villain.

I was so excited to hear that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back! Apparently, Marvel never really stopped talking to him after his initial run, and they were always hoping to find a way to bring him back into the fold somehow. It’s great to know they kept that door open!

He’s a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s no surprise why,” he said in an Instagram video. “We often discussed the possibility of him coming back – when, how, and if it could happen.

About three to three and a half years ago, we started thinking about bringing Doctor Doom to the big screen and knew we needed an exceptional actor for the role. He explained they felt like anything was possible. They realized it was their creative world – a multiverse, really – and they could take risks. They decided to cast the actor who was famous for playing the hero as the villain, and fortunately, he was enthusiastic about the idea.

Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors behind the previous Avengers films including Endgame, are returning to direct the fifth and sixth movies. Their return was announced alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s new involvement, though they clarified that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was responsible for casting him.

Joe previously shared with Omelete that the idea of bringing Robert Downey Jr. back was Kevin’s. They had that discussion some time ago, and Robert really wanted them to do it, but they initially said no. They didn’t have a story or a clear path forward, so they were hesitant for a while.

One day, Stephen McFeely, a writer on Endgame and a close partner of ours, called with an idea that he felt was incredibly strong and absolutely had to be the focus of the story.

The next Avengers movie, titled Doomsday, is planned to come out on December 18, 2026. Following that, Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release in 2027.
