A key figure at Marvel has revealed that two major characters will lead the upcoming *VisionQuest* series, and it may not feature Wanda Maximoff. Following the massive success of *WandaVision* in 2021, plans were made for a three-part story arc focusing on Wanda, available on Disney+. However, while a prominent character from that series will now be the central focus, this new story will involve a team effort rather than a single hero’s journey.
Terry Matalas, the creator of the upcoming Disney+ series *VisionQuest*, has revealed that Vision and Ultron will be the central characters. In an interview with Phase Hero’s Brandon Davis following New York Comic-Con 2025, Matalas hinted at the return of Ultron in robot form, highlighting the roles of Paul Bettany and James Spader. He described them as “the core dynamic of the show.”
As a big Marvel fan, I’m really excited that we actually *get* to see a physical Robot Ultron! Honestly, a lot of the show revolves around the interplay between James Spader and Paul Bettany – their performances and the dynamic between their characters are really central to everything that happens.
James Spader is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ultron in the upcoming series VisionQuest, marking his first appearance as the character since Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Though the show will include several villains, Ultron will be central to developing Vision’s storyline, and Spader will appear as a human version of the character for the first time. It’s worth noting that Wanda Maximoff’s involvement in the series hasn’t been officially announced.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming series, *VisionQuest*, will conclude the story that began with *WandaVision* and *Agatha All Along*. Starring Paul Bettany, Ruaridh Mollica, James Spader, Henry Lewis, Emily Hampshire, and James D’Arcy, the series follows Vision as he travels the world, exploring the memories of his original self and searching for his place in the universe. *VisionQuest* is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
Wanda Maximoff’s Impact on VisionQuest
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wanda Maximoff was thought to have died when Mount Wundagore collapsed on her in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Although some fans believe a red flash of light suggested she survived, that film was Elizabeth Olsen’s last appearance as the character in the MCU.
While Wanda and Vision are the main characters in this Disney+ series of shows, there’s currently no word on Wanda appearing in the *VisionQuest* installment. Despite this, the trailer hints she might be mentioned – a quote from Ultron references Vision’s connection to his famous love interest, suggesting she’ll at least be acknowledged.
It’s still uncertain if Elizabeth Olsen will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and most fans don’t anticipate her appearing in many episodes of *VisionQuest*. While a cameo in the finale or after the credits is possible, the series is expected to primarily center on Vision’s story, not Wanda’s.
Even though she’s no longer a central character, her death will deeply affect Vision, especially as the new White Vision processes his memories and considers her importance. This will create significant emotional conflict for him as he rebuilds his life, and he’ll face further difficulties with several villains targeting him.
While it’s possible Wanda Maximoff could return in a future Disney+ series, the most likely candidate hasn’t been revealed yet. We’ll likely learn more once Vision and other characters are re-established within the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year.
