Marvel and Star Wars Have Switched Release Dates – Here’s What That Means!
Lately, it seems like there’s been a shift or interchange between the cinematic universes of Marvel and Star Wars, due to some major recent announcements affecting Marvel. Since Disney bought Lucasfilm back in 2012, these two film franchises have been working together in a sense, given that Disney is the common parent company for both Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios. This shared ownership has allowed both to expand their reach significantly compared to what they were capable of independently, as demonstrated by the numerous upcoming Marvel films on the horizon. When considering the upcoming Star Wars movies scheduled for release in the coming years, this increased production rate becomes even more apparent.
Considering the multitude of upcoming TV series for both Star Wars and Marvel, it’s clearer than ever that these two franchises have been intertwined for some time. However, they’ve seldom appeared together on the big screen. The flop of Solo: A Star Wars Story versus Avengers: Infinity War at the box office is a major factor behind their usually separate release dates. This trend continues, but recent Marvel developments hint that they might have exchanged roles.
Marvel & Star Wars’ Big Movies Have Switched Their Release Plans
The news broke in May 2025 that the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” was moved from May 2026 to the end of the year. Its follow-up, “Avengers: Secret Wars,” was also postponed from May 2027 to December 2027. This shift in schedule is unusual for Marvel and Star Wars films under Disney’s management, especially when considering the launch date of “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” Traditionally, Marvel’s major movies have been launched either in May or late April, while Star Wars projects usually premiere in December.
The initial film of the Marvel Avengers series, “The Avengers” (released in 2012 on May 4th), was followed by its sequel, “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” three years later on May 1st, 2015. The two-part story of “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” maintained this pattern, with the former releasing on April 27th, 2018, and the latter on April 26th, 2019. Since 2012, the Marvel Avengers series has consistently chosen the late April and May period for their film premieres.
Over the past decade, almost all Disney’s “Star Wars” films have premiered during December. The exception is “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which came out in May 2018 and had to compete with “Avengers: Infinity War.” Due to this competition, it became the franchise’s lowest-grossing film. On the other hand, each Disney “Star Wars” movie such as “The Force Awakens,” “Rogue One,” “The Last Jedi,” and “The Rise of Skywalker,” have all been successful, earning more than $1 billion at the global box office.
In the near future, it appears that “Avengers” films might be premiering in December instead of their traditional slots, while “Star Wars” movies may take over the usual May spots. The postponement of “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” coupled with the confirmed release date of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” on May 22, 2026, suggests this shift. Additionally, Ryan Gosling’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” scheduled for May 2027 supports this trend, indicating that these two franchises are likely to alternate release dates for some time.
Why Marvel & Star Wars Have Swapped Places
It Is For A Mutual Cause
It appears that Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars franchises have decided to switch release months, with May traditionally being linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) due to the success of The Avengers, and Star Wars preferring May because its initial six movies were released in that month. Since Star Wars was unable to reclaim May after Disney resumed production, they opted for a different release date instead, as the release of Solo didn’t seem profitable enough to warrant a return to May.
Due to the production-related delays in releasing “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” it has now become possible for them to be made. Originally set for release in earlier years, “Avengers: Doomsday” didn’t start filming until May 2025, a year before its initial schedule. By rescheduling the releases to December of 2026 and 2027, both Marvel films now have a more practical production schedule.
In May of 2026 and 2027 respectively, “Star Wars” will retain its position, with “The Mandalorian and Grogu” and “Star Wars: Starfighter” being the main attractions. Interestingly, there will be no rivalry between these two universes since “Avengers: Doomsday” won’t be released in May 2026. Instead, the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” is planning to dominate the upcoming December slots, while “Star Wars” reasserts its presence in the month that has been associated with it since 1977.
