Marty Sheargold’s radio comeback ends in disaster for The Kyle & Jackie O Show as disgraced star reveals real reason behind his now-infamous Matildas rant

Marty Sheargold briefly returned to the radio, but was taken off the air almost immediately after starting his broadcast.

After making offensive remarks about the Matildas and leaving Triple M in 2025, Sheargold appeared on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, but the interview was quickly ended.

After a short break, show host Kyle Sandilands said the awkward removal of Sheargold from the show was an error.

Co–host Jackie O Henderson added: ‘I could’ve died, I thought, “What’s he done?”‘

Sheargold, who has not had a radio gig since February 2025, took the gaffe in his stride.

He joked, ‘I honestly thought I was the least likely of us to get “canceled.” ‘

He added that simply finishing the radio interview without any major issues would be a huge relief and one of the highlights of his career.

A year ago, Sheargold faced criticism and was widely condemned for disparaging remarks about the Matildas, describing their behavior as immature. He also made an offensive statement, saying he would prefer a painful act to watching women’s sports.

Sheargold is calling his latest comedy tour ‘The Red Card Show,’ a playful nod to the recent controversy.

In soccer, a sending-off, or red card, is a penalty where the referee removes a player from the game due to a serious foul or misbehavior.

At the start of the interview, Jackie questioned Sheargold about whether he planned to include anything related to the ‘Matildas’ in his next comedy show, but he was unexpectedly cut off mid-answer.

He explained he didn’t think about it much anymore, as it happened a year ago and only directly impacted his children and himself. He expressed hope that others had also put it behind them, but his sentence was interrupted.

After returning to the show, the actor who played Fisk tried to explain his offensive comments, saying he was overwhelmed with grief after his father’s death and shouldn’t have been working.

He started by saying he was also dealing with some really difficult personal issues at the time.

‘So I didn’t get to put any context around what was happening for me personally.

My dad had passed away just the week before, and I’d given the speech at his funeral on Friday. Then, on Monday, I was back at work when the excitement around the Matildas really took off.

You can’t mention it then, though, because it would seem like you’re trying to gain sympathy by bringing up his father’s death.

‘I shouldn’t have been at work is really the bottom line.’

Sheargold also said that the notorious Matildas segment was pre-recorded for his show.

He explained that after recording something, you sometimes wonder if you should call and ask them to remove it.

‘I wasn’t even thinking like that, because I was so sidelined by what was going on for me.’Ā

Soon after the comments about Matilda were broadcast, Sheargold left Triple M. He stated that the decision was a mutual agreement.

Last September, Australia’s media regulator, ACMA, determined that four radio stations owned by Southern Cross Austereo – including Triple M Sydney – violated broadcasting standards because of comments made by a presenter, Sheargold, about a well-known sports team.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how damaging language can be, and the recent findings regarding Sheargold’s comments are truly concerning. The Australian Communications and Media Authority discovered his remarks weren’t just sexist, but delivered in a way that was meant to belittle and mock women, showing a clear lack of respect and even contempt. It’s a stark reminder of the impact words can have, and why fostering respectful communication is so vital.

Football Australia considered Sheargold’s comments disrespectful, arguing they downplayed the incredible accomplishments of the women’s national team and overlooked their significant influence on both Australian sport and the country as a whole.
