Martin Short looks devastated in first public outing since daughter Katherine’s tragic death

Martin Short was seen having dinner in Santa Monica last Friday, not long after the passing of his daughter.

The 76-year-old actor, still grieving the loss of his daughter Katherine who died in February, was comforted by his close friend JJ Abrams, who joined him for a day out.

He looked solemn while dressed in a dark suit jacket and light blue button-up shirt.

It was heartbreaking to see him out in public for the first time since losing his child. He’s a true Hollywood icon, and I always notice when he’s looking well – he was clean-shaven, which seemed like a small but meaningful detail given everything he’s going through. It’s just awful to think about, especially knowing he has three children and is grieving such a profound loss.

As a lifestyle expert, I often see beautiful blended families forming, and Katherine’s is no exception. Beyond her own children, she and her late wife, Nancy Dolman, lovingly welcomed two sons, Oliver, who’s 39, and Henry, 36, into their family through adoption. It’s a testament to the power of love and family that they built together.

In late February, 42-year-old Katherine was found at her home in the Hollywood Hills with a gunshot wound, and it appeared to be a suicide.

A spokesperson for Katherine Hartley Short announced her death with deep sadness, stating, “We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short.”

The Short family is deeply saddened by this loss and asks for privacy as they grieve. Katherine was a bright and joyful person who will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.

After Katherine died, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) stated that her friend contacted them when she hadn’t been reachable for a full day.

The last time she was seen in public with her father was at her 40th birthday party in December 2023, held at Grand Master Recorders.

Katherine was a licensed social worker with a master’s degree from USC.

Short and Dolman were married for 30 years before she died of ovarian cancer in 2010.

Speaking about his wife in a 2019 AARP interview, he described their marriage as a ‘triumph.’

The actor, known for his role in ‘Father of the Bride,’ shared that even though his grandmother passed away in 2010, he still often thinks about her. He frequently wonders what she would think of his life choices, particularly when it comes to raising their three children, often speaking to her in his thoughts as if she were still there – a simple ‘Hey, Nan.’

Short also said that he has never been one of those people who think death means means ‘the end.’

He shared his belief that when someone dies, their essence lives on within the hearts of those who loved them. He felt it was a mistake to think of death as a complete ending and to avoid talking about those who have passed away.

That’s based on denial that we’re all going to die. So to me, she’s still here.’

In his 2014 memoir, he described the death of Roy Dolman as the most devastating experience of his life.

While helping his children cope with the loss of their mother, Short relied on his own past experiences to guide him.

The night before his wife passed away, he spoke to his youngest son, Henry, and said, ‘This experience will make you stronger and more determined.’
