Martin Scorsese, 81, says he’s not retiring – and he still has plans to direct multiple films: ‘I hope God gives me the strength’
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for cinematic history and a deep appreciation for the masters of our craft, I must say that Martin Scorsese’s unwavering dedication to his art is truly inspiring. At 82 years young, the visionary filmmaker continues to push boundaries and challenge conventions, leaving us in awe of his boundless creativity.
Martin Scorsese has made it clear that he doesn’t plan to stop directing anytime soon.
On Monday, during a press event at the Museum of Cinema in Turin, Italy, the filmmaker – who celebrates his 82nd birthday on November 17 – expressed his aspiration to finish projects he’s currently developing, despite his upcoming milestone age.
‘I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all,’ he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Academy Award winner — who was accompanied by his aspiring filmmaker daughter Francesca Scorsese — was being honored with the museum’s Stella della Mole lifetime achievement award.
‘I still have more films to make, and I hope God gives me the strength to make them,’ he continued.
Scorsese’s comment is made within the framework of his Academy Award-nominated Western crime drama, “Killers of the Flower Moon.
The movie portrays a string of murders involving members of the Osage Nation during the 1920s’ beginning. Later findings by what would become the modern FBI revealed that some white residents were marrying tribe members for their oil wealth and then committing murder afterwards.
Members of the white community, who were also part of the community, unjustly took control of the tribe’s oil resources by compelling Osage members to accept unfair guardianships.
Some people pondered whether this movie might serve as Scorsese’s final cinematic bow, considering his brief appearance in the poignant-to-last scene where he narrates the legal consequences of the crimes.
However, contrary to initial assumptions, it seems that the director of “Taxi Driver” did not mean to signal his farewell from cinema; instead, reports suggest that he’s currently developing two movies: one about the life of Frank Sinatra, and another inspired by the life of Jesus.
At the event, Scorsese, honored by his former co-star in The Last Temptation of Christ, Willem Dafoe, mentioned that he would be pausing his work on story-driven films to focus on a factual venture in Italy.
‘I’m filming between Ustica and Taormina. It’s a documentary about marine archaeology,’ he revealed.
As an ardent admirer, I find myself deeply inspired by the groundbreaking work of marine archaeologist, Lisa Briggs, particularly her intriguing research on the Shipwreck of Sicily.
Using DNA analysis on artifacts retrieved from shipwrecks, Briggs can construct a vivid portrayal of the lives lived by sailors, as well as the vessels they navigated, reaching back into antiquity.
Scorsese’s latest documentary is being developed, as it was recently announced that his projects about Sinatra and Jesus have been delayed.
Despite the uncertainty about when filming will commence for these projects, Variety indicates that the director won’t start shooting in 2024.
Initially, Martin Scorsese planned to direct “The Life of Jesus,” a movie adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, as his first film project.
The Life Of Jesus is reportedly still in development, and no cast has been officially announced.
In 2016, Scorsese brought another novel by Endō to life in the critically-acclaimed film Silence, which was a deeply personal project for the director. The movie featured Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson in its stellar cast.
Back in 2009, Martin Scorsese initially unveiled his Sinatra project. Later, efforts were made to bring the project to life, with an expected commencement set for November 2024 – a plan that ultimately got scrapped in August of this year.
As reported by Variety, a potential obstacle in producing the movie could be securing approval from the Sinatra estate, as it’s managed by Tina Sinatra, one of Frank Sinatra’s daughters.
In this upcoming movie, I’m eagerly anticipating the exploration of intricate aspects surrounding Frank Sinatra’s marriages, particularly his union with Ava Gardner and the ending of his prior marriage to Nancy Barbato, my grandmother.
Martin Scorsese is currently working on various other ventures, one of them being the television version of his 1991 film remake of Cape Fear. He is collaborating with Steven Spielberg on this project as an executive producer.
