Martin Roberts shares emotional health update as he refuses to slow down despite warnings from doctors – after horror hospital dash that left him with ‘three hours to live’
After reading about Martin’s harrowing hospital ordeal and subsequent recovery, I find myself profoundly moved by his resilience and strength. The way he faced such a life-threatening situation with unwavering courage is truly inspiring. It’s a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
Martin Roberts recently posted a heartfelt update about his emotional well-being, disclosing that he chose not to heed the advice from his physicians to slow down.
Previously, the host of Homes Under the Hammer, now aged 61, revealed that doctors informed him he only had a few hours left to live due to his condition called pericardial effusion. This urgent situation necessitated immediate surgery, which ultimately rescued his life.
Pericardial effusion is a build-up of fluid in the structure around the heart.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d share with you that I occasionally experience sudden discomfort in my chest, which triggers feelings of anxiety.
He clarified that he isn’t certain about his remaining time, so he’s making an effort to accomplish as many positive actions in the world as he can.
Martin told TopMob: ‘The physical side of things took a lot longer than we thought to get around.
‘And I still get twinges and every single time I get a twinge in my chest, I panic.
‘As anyone who has had any kind of problems with their heart would attest to it.
Their tales tend to trickle out gradually, causing a whirlwind of concern as you wait for more information.
I visited the surgeon who performed my emergency surgery, and I asked him, “How much longer might I have lived?” or alternatively, “I met up with the surgeon from my emergency procedure, and I inquired, ‘For how much longer could I have lasted?’
He commented, “Given the circumstances, it seems you might not have survived last night. Fortunately, I happened to be on duty.
‘I said ”what?” he said, ”you probably had maybe two or three hours to live”.
2 to 3 hours ago, it seemed like I was on the verge of death, leaving behind my children, unfulfilled dreams, and undone desires.
Indeed, it’s quite similar, but let me rephrase for you: “Absolutely, and it seems we’re dealing with the emotional aspect here. Recovery on this front tends to require more time compared to the physical healing process.
I’ve been advised to slow down and relax, but instead, I’ve chosen a different path.
‘So, that’s why I’ve taken on a project in Wales – restoring a pub for the benefit of the community. We’re employing local young people for the work, offering opportunities to those who are disengaged or disadvantaged, teaching them construction skills.’
‘Just doing lots of good.
‘I don’t know how much time I’ve got left, so I just want to do as much as I possibly can to help.
The focus isn’t primarily on wealth. Instead, it’s more about leaving a lasting impact, as that’s where your legacy lies.
In the year 2022, the presenter had a critical, potentially lifesaving surgery due to a misunderstanding where they thought their chest discomfort was related to lingering effects of Covid-19.
To boost his well-being, Martin enrolled in the E4 show “The Big Celebrity Detox,” where celebrities experiment with alternative treatments like consuming their own urine.
In the debut episode, Martin admitted to feeling ‘rocked to his core’ by his health scare.
2023 saw Martin stepping into the spotlight on the challenging television program that cautioned spectators against replicating the tasks themselves. As he pondered over his past twelve months, Martin described them as “terrifyingly tough.
He said: ‘This year has been a frighteningly horrible year for me. A few months ago, I had a near-death experience and that’s rocked me to my core.
‘I actually want this to make a difference, do I think it will happen? The jury’s out.’
In the initial episode, Martin undertook a variety of challenging activities, such as consuming his own urine and swallowing seeds known for inducing vomiting.
However, Martin expressed his doubts about the impact of the challenges and openly shared them with spiritual advisor Sah D’Simone.
When being told the first task would include drinking his own urine, Martin remained sceptical.
He said: ‘How can something your body gets rid of as a waste product be good for you?’
In spite of his concerns, Martin participated along with his fellow actors, which included Kerry Katona, Megan Barton-Hanson, and Princess Olga Romanoff, in the challenge.
Previously, Martin had shared his harrowing experience at the hospital during an interview with Philip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on This Morning. He explained that he wasn’t feeling well for about two weeks.
Over the past few years, I’ve experienced several bouts of chest infections and I’ve had asthma from my early years, which means I often have a feeling of tightness in my chest. This is something I’ve grown accustomed to.
Over the lead-up to the Easter holiday weekend, I found myself having a hard time walking due to difficulty catching my breath.
He added: ‘The confusing thing about this, it’s a bit of a red herring, is that it gets you in the breathing side of things, so you don’t think it’s something to do with your heart.
You seem to be contemplating, “Could it possibly relate to my chest area?” Engaging in self-diagnosis via Google is potentially risky in this scenario.
It appeared as if this could have been signs of prolonged Covid effects – severe fatigue, tightness and pain in the chest, shortness of breath, and by the end of the holiday weekend, I was becoming delirious, swapping letters around. I told Kirsty, “We need to go to the hospital.
His wife Kirsty added: ‘Really worrying. We’re thankful we got to to A&E when we did.’
Signs of pericardial effusion might include experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, unease during breathing, dizziness, and swelling in the abdomen or legs.
In more serious instances, doctors might opt for a surgical procedure to remove excess fluids instead of relying solely on medication.
As a diehard admirer putting it in my own words, I’d say Martin revealed that an excessive accumulation of fluid was placing an immense burden on his heart, ultimately leading to its failure due to the pressure exerted.
The doctor explained to Philip and Rochelle: ‘There’s a sac surrounding your heart that has been accumulating fluid, known as pericardial effusion. This condition puts pressure on the heart, preventing it from expanding properly and pumping blood efficiently. As a result, all of your organs may begin to malfunction.’
When they reached me, my kidneys and liver were each functioning at only 30 percent. My lungs were unable to take in sufficient oxygen, and at any moment, I might have experienced a heart attack due to my heart essentially suffocating itself.
He added, ‘We’re talking minutes stroke hours of life left here.’
Inquired about his thoughts at the time, Martin responded: ‘I simply entrusted my life to the experts. There I was, on a specialized heart drainage unit – there was a unique surgical room, and they used a local anesthetic.’
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself observing an intriguing procedure where a tube is inserted into a person’s heart from the side. With a large syringe, a healthcare professional begins to extract a dark, almost ominous-looking fluid that I refer to as ‘the essence of life transition.’ They transfer this fluid from one container to another and into a plastic beaker. The sight leaves me captivated…
Philip inquired from Kristy if her husband’s experience had served as a catalyst for a fresh start between them, and she responded: ‘Absolutely. Haven’t we discussed this before? I even sent a card to Martin upon his hospital discharge, stating something like, ”This moment could be seen as a turning point in our lives.”’
