Martin Kemp jokes he’s ‘the original nepo dad’ after his son Roman’s cheeky swipe at his I’m A Celebrity stint as he becomes the ninth star to arrive in Australia

Martin Kemp has arrived in Brisbane, becoming the ninth celebrity to enter the jungle ahead of this year’s ‘I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’

Spandau Ballet bassist Martin Kemp, age 64, jokingly called himself the ‘original nepo-dad’ in an interview with the Daily Mail. This comes as his son, Capital FM host Roman Kemp, is following in his footsteps by appearing on the same reality show, after Roman finished third in 2019.

When asked what he’d miss most about leaving the UK, he simply said he’d miss his family, like anyone would.

Roman publicly criticized his father online, accusing him of only getting opportunities because of Roman’s own appearance on the One Show, calling him a ‘nepo-daddy’ – someone who benefits from family connections.

To which Martin told the Mail: ‘Yeah I like that, I’m the original nepo dad.’

The musician is heading to the jungle to compete alongside popular figures like Twitch streamer AngryGinge, actress Lisa Riley from Emmerdale, Jack Osbourne, and Lioness player Alex Scott.

Martin’s son, Roman – whose mother is singer Shirlie from the group Pepsi & Shirlie – playfully told his father to ‘enjoy’ his time camping in the Australian jungle.

Martin Kemp rose to fame as a member of the band Spandau Ballet in the late 1970s. His son, Roman, who he shares with his wife Shirlie Holliman, appeared on a reality show in 2019.

Before going into the jungle, Martin explained he’d had to reschedule some work commitments, but admitted he was hooked when Roman Kemp appeared on ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!’

‘I watched it every day and enjoyed it so much. I felt it was now time in my life for an adventure.

I’ve been DJing for the past five years, and it’s been a constant whirlwind. I realized I needed to take some time for myself.

‘I absolutely love the show, it is iconic TV, which I love being part of.’

This follows Alex Scott’s heartfelt discussion about her girlfriend, Jess Glynne, who had just arrived in Australia earlier that day.

The 41-year-old host of Football Focus arrived wearing a brown knitted tracksuit – the top cost £645 and the bottoms £597 – and confessed to the Daily Mail, ‘I’m so nervous.’

She shared that she really misses Jess Glynne, explaining that this is the longest they’ve ever been separated during their time together, and she’s still adjusting to it.

This is going to be tough, and I’m really disappointed I have to miss her show in Birmingham. I’m heartbroken not to be there, but I know she’ll always be supporting me.

Alex admitted to feeling overwhelmed with emotion, saying he was trying not to dwell on how long he’d be apart from her. He expressed hope of seeing her again at the bridge, but acknowledged it wasn’t certain.

She said a tearful goodbye to her girlfriend, Jess, at Heathrow Airport on Monday before departing. They had been together for two years, and Jess was very supportive.

Alex and singer Jess, a couple since 2023, were photographed embracing as they said goodbye at the airport before one of them flew off.

Alex, a 41-year-old TV personality and ex-footballer, enjoyed a playing career with teams like Arsenal, Birmingham City, and the Great Britain national team. He now works as a sports commentator.

It came hours after Comedian Eddie Kadi touched down in Australia wearing a patterned tracksuit.

When asked why he was in Australia, he bizarrely told the Daily Mail, ‘I’m looking for  Mowgli.

Oh my gosh, I just had to come find Mowgli, Timon, and Pumbaa! I heard they were nearby, and it feels like forever since I’ve seen my absolute best friends. I’m so excited to finally catch up with them!

When asked if he’d miss his young daughter, the radio host responded with a heartfelt, ‘Oh, absolutely!’

I’m really going to miss my daughter. I’ve been making little videos for her during her trip, as she’s never been this far from home before.

Eddie was among a group including Ruby Wax, AngryGinge, Aitch, Lisa Riley, Kelly Brook, and Shona McGarty who had all arrived in Australia previously.

Jack Osbourne, son of the late Ozzy Osbourne, is traveling from the US to appear on the show, following his father’s passing in July.
