Martin Freeman and Siobhan Finneran’s ITV crime drama is now on Netflix
As a seasoned gamer of both real-life and screen dramas, I must say that “A Confession” is a gripping tale that has held my attention from start to finish. Martin Freeman’s portrayal of Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher is nothing short of captivating, drawing me in with every episode.
Martin Freeman and Siobhan Finneran’s gripping ITV crime drama A Confession is now on Netflix.
The six-episode drama portrayed the actual probe into Sian O’Callaghan’s 2011 death, which occurred after she vanished during a night out in Swindon that same year.
Previously known for his role in Sherlock, actor Freeman assumes the lead in A Confession, portraying Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher. This drama series centers on Fulcher’s actions that violated police protocol to apprehend the individual ultimately convicted of O’Callaghan’s murder.
As a devoted follower of the case, I found myself compelled to step down from my role when it was revealed that during my interrogation of suspect Christopher Halliwell, I neglected to ensure his legal representation was present and failed to issue the required warnings.
The show explores the moral consequences that arise when rules are bent, as Christopher Halliwell ended up serving a life sentence for O’Callaghan’s murder and also the earlier killing of Becky Godden.
Although Fulcher was held accountable by a police review board for severe misconduct, breaking Code C of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE), Becky Godden’s mother publicly endorsed him due to his role in apprehending her daughter’s murderer.
In an interview with Digital Spy when the show premiered in 2019, Freeman expressed agreement with Fulcher’s decision to prioritize apprehending a murderer over adhering strictly to police regulations.
Freeman explained to us that his actions, while some might not consider them a violation of the law, were indeed illegal. He clarified that he hadn’t resorted to physical violence like kicking or punching anyone, fabricating evidence against someone, or misrepresenting another person’s words.
I want to express my deep support for Steve Fulcher, and I believe this sentiment extends beyond our shared experiences. It’s hard for me to comprehend how anyone could argue that his actions were morally incorrect.
I, too, strongly advocate for police accountability. Absolutely, they should be held accountable. However, from a moral standpoint, I prefer officers like him on duty.
The TV dramatisation was written by Jeff Pope (See No Evil: The Moors Murders), and also features former EastEnders star Joe Absolom as Christopher Halliwell. Imelda Staunton and Peter Wight feature in the show too.
A Confession is now available to stream on Netflix.
