Martin Compston’s Line of Duty return set to ‘mirror real life’ with crime plot

Fans were thrilled to learn last month that the popular police drama Line of Duty is coming back for a seventh season. Now, star Martin Compston has revealed that the upcoming storylines will be based on actual events.

I was reading an interview with Adrian Dunbar – you know, Steve Arnott from Line of Duty – over on Digital Spy. He was talking about the new season, and he thinks the four-year break has actually been a good thing for everyone involved, including the actors and Jed Mercurio, the guy who writes and creates the show.

The actor explained that having positive momentum helps, and everyone’s been working on other projects. For example, Vicky McClure has filmed four seasons of Trigger Point since they last worked together.

Jed’s been busy filming a major Netflix series. I’ve worked on a lot of Amazon Prime shows, and Adrian Dunbar was involved with Ridley, which was fantastic. But we always intended to reunite at some point.

Honestly, the break between seasons isn’t just good for everyone involved – the actors and the crew – it’s actually letting the writer, Mercurio, really build something amazing for the next series. Martin Compston even said it’s making us excited to get back to filming! It definitely doesn’t feel like work, which is a great sign.

This process also allows Jed the necessary time to craft a complete story. Simply ordering it wouldn’t have worked – he’d have been stuck trying to figure out what to write. Instead, he had the time to consider things and thought, ‘This idea would be perfect.’

Despite how outlandish it seems, there’s a basis in reality – it’s inspired by something that’s actually happened in law enforcement. Because people are already aware of these kinds of events, I think it will really resonate with audiences.

Having spent more than ten years as an actor, Compston said he’s now at a point where he can look back on his most well-known role with satisfaction, thanks to his experience and maturity.

He said he’s simply proud of the work he’s done. He reflected that if this had happened earlier in his career, he might have felt the need to distance himself and establish a different reputation. But now, he’s incredibly proud if this is what he’s remembered for.

Even though fans have to wait for the seventh season of the crime drama, Martin Compston has a new project available now: The Revenge Club, which is currently streaming on Paramount+.

Inspired by JD Pennington’s novel The Othello Club, the series stars an actor playing a divorced man who joins a support group. He soon discovers a hidden world of plotting and risk when he learns six members are planning revenge on their exes.

I’m so excited about this new thriller! It’s got an amazing cast – Douglas Henshall and Sharon Rooney are both in it, which is fantastic. But Martin Compston especially raved about Aimee Ffion-Edwards, who plays Emily. He really thinks she’s brilliant, and I can’t wait to see her performance!

He shared that he’d long admired Ffion-Edwards from a distance. He described her as a remarkably talented actor and a genuinely supportive, kind, and professional person to work with. He added that she has a lot of energy and consistently brings her best to the set, making it easy to collaborate with her.

Line of Duty season 7 has no release date. The Revenge Club is streaming now on Paramount+.
