Martin Compston’s ‘absurdly far-fetched but entertaining’ thriller helps ITV hit streaming milestone

Martin Compston’s thriller Red Eye, praised by fans on IMDb for being “far-fetched to the point of absurdity but really entertaining”, has just helped ITVX reach a huge milestone.

ITV announced record streaming numbers for January, marking its most successful month ever. Drama series performed particularly well on its streaming service, ITVX. Leading the way was Red Eye, starring Compston, with both seasons one and two together attracting over 25 million views last month.

Both The Hunting Wives and Red Eye were popular hits for the streaming service, becoming its most-watched acquired titles with nearly seven million views. January was a strong month for ITVX dramas overall, with viewership reaching its highest level since January 2024, when the BAFTA-winning series Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, featuring Toby Jones as Alan Bates, was released.

A thriller by Compston, released on January 1st, proved more popular than the second season of After The Flood, starring Sophie Rundle, which began airing on January 18th.

I was so excited to read what the creator of the show, Peter A Dowling, had to say! He mentioned in a recent interview that this is actually his first British TV series, and he’s absolutely thrilled about it. It’s awesome to hear how much he’s enjoying working on it, especially given how much we all love the show!

Honestly, everyone involved did such an incredible job, and the way the audience reacted really showed how amazing the whole team was at bringing my story to life. It meant so much to me, especially getting a thumbs up from my friends and family back in Manchester – that really meant the world!

Everyone’s been asking if we’ll get a season three of Red Eye, and honestly, absolutely! I’m super hyped to see what kind of messes Hana, Delaney, and Jess get into next. We’re even hoping to make Red Eye a full-blown trilogy, like a proper movie series!

Julie Gardner, an executive producer on the show, mentioned that there’s a story planned for the main characters – Hana, Delaney, and Jess – that creator Pete is eager to explore in a potential third season, though it’s still in the early stages of development.

ITV reported that its streaming service, ITVX, has reached 10 billion views since its launch in December 2022.

Red Eye seasons 1 and 2 are available to stream on ITVX and airs on ITV1.
