Martin Compston reveals surprising Line of Duty return detail he’s most looking forward to

As a huge Line of Duty fan, I was seriously hyped when they finally announced season seven – it felt like forever! And apparently, Martin Compston is just as excited as the rest of us to see the team back together, but his reason for being thrilled is a little unexpected, which is pretty cool.

Martin Compston told Digital Spy he’s most excited to wear Steve Arnott’s waistcoats again when he returns to the role.

He admitted he has a fondness for waistcoats, but also expressed his genuine affection for Belfast, describing it as a fantastic place to film. He also shared that he, Vicky McClure, and Adrian Dunbar are very close friends.

It’s wonderful being able to reconnect with them, but stepping back into the role – putting on the clothes and doing the voice – really brings the character back to life. I can feel him taking over again.

Although fans are still waiting for the next season of Line of Duty, you can watch Martin Compston now in his new series, The Revenge Club.

I’m playing this thriller where I’m Callum, and let me tell you, it’s intense! My character can go from being totally sweet and caring to absolutely furious in an instant. It’s a really challenging role to portray that kind of emotional flip.

Compston explained that playing an angry Scotsman is a reliable source of humor. He feels it’s a strong part of the character, and that the character definitely holds a lot of bottled-up frustration.

One of the best parts of acting, particularly when portraying strong emotions like anger, is that it can be a great release. I generally lead a pretty carefree life, so getting to explore those intense feelings through a character is a good way to express them.

“So yeah, because it gives you time to get a lot of stuff out that’s maybe in your own head.”

He explained that the key is to actually put the new connections to use. It’s like meeting people and then immediately needing to rely on them – a bit of a trial by fire.

It’s like you take that feeling of being nervous and turn it into motivation. You tell yourself you’re hesitant, but you’ll push through anyway, even if it feels like someone else is pushing you. It’s about finding a way to focus that energy.

There’s no confirmed release date yet for season seven of Line of Duty on BBC One or iPlayer. However, you can watch The Revenge Club now on Paramount+.
