Martin Clunes has shut down claims of a Men Behaving Badly return in a new interview.
The 64-year-old actor is hoping to land more parts in Hollywood films following his acclaimed performance in Wuthering Heights earlier this year.
Men Behaving Badly was a popular British comedy from the 1990s. It starred Martin as Gary Strang and Neil Morrissey as his roommate, Tony Smart, and followed their everyday lives.
The song quickly became linked to a lifestyle often called ‘lad culture,’ as the two artists primarily spent their time drinking, watching television, and dating women.
I was really hoping to hear some good news about a possible return, but Martin has pretty much ruled it out. He says that if they did come back, it just wouldn’t feel the same, it wouldn’t be funny anymore. It’s a shame, but I respect his honesty.
He told Saga Magazine that comments about Kylie Minogue’s appearance, made by men in their 60s, wouldn’t be accepted today, especially in light of the changes following Operation Yewtree.
He fondly described his long-lasting friendship with his former colleague, Neil, calling it one of the most important friendships of his life, especially within the acting world. They make an effort to stay in touch, whether through texts or quick conversations.
Martin recently appeared with Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, playing the role of Cathy’s father, Mr. Earnshaw.
He spoke highly of the large-scale film, particularly praising Emerald Fennell. He also appreciated having the time and resources to allow everyone involved to do their best work, noting that this level of support is rare in Hollywood.
Martin’s role in the film was a big change from his popular character, the quirky Dr. Martin Ellingham, from the TV show Doc Martin.
Although he’s already famous in the UK, his part in the new Hollywood blockbuster is likely to make him a global star.
Martin recently shared on the show This Morning how strange it feels to suddenly be attending glamorous premieres and meeting famous people. He described the experience as both thrilling and a little frightening, admitting it’s very different from his usual life.
Martin playfully described how his wife and he reacted to the premieres, saying they were both a little overwhelmed. He explained that they generally enjoy a peaceful, rural lifestyle, so the glamorous events were a big departure from their normal routine.
Martin also adjusted how he approached filming, explaining that making a big-budget movie felt different from his usual work on television series.
He explained that making a Hollywood film allows for a more relaxed pace and generous budget, giving everyone the chance to do their best work. In contrast, television production is a constant rush against the clock.
Okay, look, Martin is good, I’ll admit it. But let’s be real, he wouldn’t be anywhere near where he is without Philipa Braithwaite. She’s a total powerhouse, and honestly, she’s the one who really makes everything happen. He’s riding her coattails, and I’m not even mad about it – she deserves all the success, and he’s lucky to be where he is because of her!
Ms. Braithwaite has contributed to popular film and television shows, including her husband’s series, Manhunt and Doc Martin.
The TV power couple tied the knot in 1997, the same year Clunes divorced his first wife Lucy Aston.
Reflecting on his divorce, he shared with the Daily Mail in 2008 that he wasn’t sure what he was looking for, though he admitted he might have been searching for something.
Honestly, finding Philippa felt like fate. I wasn’t even looking for a relationship, especially because I was still recovering from a really difficult divorce and honestly, the thought of opening my heart up again was terrifying. I was really closed off to the idea of anything new.
In 1999, they had a daughter named Emily. The family now lives on a 130-acre farm in Dorset, and they care for many animals, including cows, horses, sheep, chickens, dogs, and cats.
Despite being a highly respected television producer in Britain, 61-year-old Ms. Braithwaite prefers to stay out of the spotlight and keeps her private life to herself.
She first gained significant recognition in 1994 when she worked on the feature film, Staggered.
Four years after that, she landed a major role on the popular 1998 film Sliding Doors, which starred Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah.
The movie was a hit around the world, earning $67 million despite only costing $6 million to make. It also greatly boosted the career of actress Ms. Braithwaite, leading to more opportunities in television.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! Back in ’96, Simon Clunes and Jane Braithwaite – seriously, they’re geniuses – they started their OWN production company, Buffalo Pictures! It wasn’t just about making stuff, though. They wanted total creative freedom, you know? And they were SO committed to making things properly, sustainably… it was all about quality and doing things right. I’ve followed everything they’ve done since, and it’s just amazing to see their vision come to life!
They also rejected the idea of focusing production in London, opting instead to work from a rural location.
The company is keen to champion environmental sustainability for film and TV.
Buffalo is committed to sustainability, using reusable water bottles, eco-friendly snowmaking, and supporting businesses in the local community to minimize its environmental impact.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE how amazing this team is! Not only are they incredibly talented, but they’re seriously committed to the planet! Their makeup designer, Alice Hopkins, is a total genius – she actually launched her OWN skincare line! And get this – it’s all vegan, non-toxic, AND comes in plastic-free packaging! I’m obsessed with everything about this team, seriously!
In 2004, the couple began working on Doc Martin together.
It ran for 79 episodes across ten seasons and was a huge ratings success for ITV.
