Martin Clunes has stepped down from his role in the American version of Doc Martin. The show, now called Best Medicine, premiered earlier this year with Josh Charles playing the lead character – the same role Clunes played in the original UK series.
Last year, it was confirmed that the original actor would be featured in the remake, playing the role of Martin’s father, Dr. Robert Best.
The first episode of his show aired this week, and his co-star, Abigail Spencer, shared excited behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram before it broadcast.
I’m so thrilled! Tonight on #BestMedicineFOX, we have the original #DocMartin star, Martin Clunes, playing Doctor Best’s father, Robert Best. It was a joy to work with him and Philippa, and it feels like the perfect way to pass the torch to a new generation.
A new behind-the-scenes video reveals that Martin Clunes describes his character as awful, and shows the strained relationship between his character and his son.

Clunes shared that it was a real joy working with Charles, and he admired watching him tackle the challenges his character faced on Doc Martin. He also jokingly mentioned how strange it was to see the name ‘Martin’ in the script when it wasn’t referring to himself.
Robert initially seems arrogant and aloof, but he’s actually keeping secrets that could dramatically change Martin’s life and make him deal with issues from his past.
Doc Martin first aired in 2004 and concluded with a Christmas special in 2022. Similar to Best Medicine, the show centers on a doctor who develops a fear of blood and relocates to a small town, where his grumpy personality often causes conflict with the residents.
