Martin Clunes’ new ITV drama is a gritty return for the Doc Martin star
A more approachable way of expressing this could be: “There’s nothing more unsettling than a person who’s in a situation beyond their abilities without realizing it, and that is precisely where the character Martin Clunes finds himself in his latest ITV drama, Out There.
In the British countryside, there’s a surge of drug trafficking activities. This is because urban criminal groups are utilizing these rural areas as their “operational fields,” transporting drugs and cash between their city bases and regional towns.
Amidst everything, we find farmer Nathan Williams (Clunes), who is deeply concerned about his innocent son Johnny (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) not getting mixed up with the wrong crowd. Simultaneously, he’s struggling to protect his livelihood from secretive land encroachments.
In a subdued manner, Clunes’ Nathan appears to walk as if burdened by sorrow. His grieving over the loss of his wife Sabine, who passed away two years ago, has left him with a palpable sadness that permeates every movement he makes, each step seemingly weighted down with melancholy.
A shared sense of sorrow weighs upon both father and son, an oppressive melancholy pervading their surroundings.
Both father and son are burdened by a common sorrow, an overwhelming sadness that lingers heavily between them like a gloomy atmosphere.
As a devoted admirer, I see Serkis mirroring Clunes’s exceptional talent through his own unique exploratory actions. He’s on a quest for understanding, peering into the radiance within my father, probing for hope with inquiries about Nathan’s past life with Sabine, before our brother Johnny came along – all part of an emotional journey aimed at reestablishing a connection with a loving but detached and disconnected dad.
Regardless of the challenges they face, the connection between these two is deeply heartwarming and filled with quiet affection. Their interplay, their struggles, and their sensitive moments draw you in immediately, making it effortless to empathize with them. When peril strikes (and it seems to happen swiftly), there’s no doubt that you’re emotionally involved.
In the two previews we’ve seen, “Out There” doesn’t feature many large, dramatic events. Instead, it moves at a deliberate pace, much like the rhythm of life that Nathan has slipped into. Yet, there’s an underlying sense of unease and apprehension that keeps you engaged.
Both Johnny and Nathan appear unaware of the impending trouble that’s gradually approaching them – Johnny blinded by his excessive loyalty, and Nathan fueled by his stubborn conviction regarding the means to safeguard his son. Neither seems to recognize the hazards that a spectator can clearly sense from afar, which generates an undercurrent of suspense as their narrative unfolds.
As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but keep an interested eye on Eva (Natalia Kostrzewa), the enigmatic housekeeper from the Williams’. She appears to be something of an underdog worth watching.
Even though the initial episodes of the series have their calm moments, a particularly intense scene takes place on the neighboring Williams’ farm, owned by farmer Owen and his spouse. This scene, in particular, is incredibly dramatic, showing that the show “Out There” is capable of tackling more serious situations.
It’s promising to see this, given the foreboding feeling that the plot will unfold into even more intensely emotional moments.
The implication is supported by the trailer where Johnny conveys to Nathan via a voice message, “I believe I’ve just taken a life, Dad.
Anticipate that Nathan will roll up his sleeves as he works tirelessly to safeguard his sole offspring. We’re confident that Clunes will tackle this task with fervor and a calculated, somewhat intimidating seriousness.
On Sunday, 19th January, “Out There” will debut on ITV1 and ITVX at 9 pm. The second episode will follow suit on Monday, 20th January, also airing at 9 pm.
