Martin Clunes confirmed for new British drama The Downfall of Huw Edwards – with first look

Channel 5 has revealed a new two-part drama called The Downfall of Huw Edwards, offering a first glimpse at the production. Martin Clunes, known for his role in Doc Martin, will play the former BBC News presenter, portraying the story of how personal revelations led to his public downfall.

So, back in 2023, The Sun newspaper dropped a story claiming a BBC presenter was paying someone for explicit photos. The BBC immediately suspended the guy, and it turned out to be Huw Edwards – his wife, Vicky Flind, eventually confirmed it was him.

After a police investigation, Edwards admitted to creating indecent images of children between December 2020 and April 2022. He was found guilty and received a suspended sentence.

The documentary The Downfall of Huw Edwards took over a year to create, marking the first time Channel 5’s factual and drama teams collaborated on a single project.

As a big follower of this story, I was really impressed by how thoroughly researched it was. The team didn’t just rely on what was already out there – they actually spoke to people who were directly involved as things unfolded over the past year. Plus, they had access to all the original investigation done by The Sun regarding Edwards, which gave them a really solid foundation to build on.

Ben Frow, the boss of Channel 5, described the story as significant and disturbing, highlighting a breach of trust by someone in a powerful role.

We delve into the personal stories behind the news by speaking with the people directly involved and those who investigated the case. This program is a unique collaboration between Channel 5’s fact-based and drama teams – a first for the network.

David Abraham from Wonderhood Studios explained that this project is the company’s first venture into dramatic storytelling, and it follows their success in creating high-quality documentaries that explore important and difficult topics.

As a fan, I’ve always felt that drama really gets to the heart of what makes us tick, exploring deep and honest emotions. I especially appreciate how willing the people sharing their stories are – it takes a lot of courage to trust us with something so personal, and we’re really thankful for that.

Michael Samuels, who directed The Windemere Children and Any Human Heart, is directing the new project. The script was written by Mark Burt, known for his work on The Trial.

The Downfall of Huw Edwards does not have a release date yet.
