Martin Clunes announces death of “fabulous” Doc Martin co-star following dementia diagnosis

Martin Clunes has announced that his cherished on-screen partner Dodger, known from Doc Martin, has sadly passed away after being diagnosed with dementia.

From 2009 to 2019, I was the beloved canine star who embodied Buddy, the dog of Martin Ellingham in the series, until I was later diagnosed with a certain health issue.

On “The One Show,” Clunes discussed the passing of a Rough Jack Russell Terrier, a sad event for him.

“He was fantastic, that boy. Sadly, no longer with us,” he said.

Pondering more about his dislike for dogs, Clunes elaborated: “I found it amusing, thinking ‘Who could possibly hate dogs?’ Yet, they all adore him and seem to spend time with him.

Instead of physically engaging with him or actually shouting, I pretended to yell by moving my lips vigorously, later enhancing the effect with post-production “shouting” sounds.

Clunes mentioned that he, along with Dodger’s trainer Sonia Turner, had a blast and relished exploring the boundaries of what they could achieve with him. He also stated that Dodger was simply extraordinary.

Previously, Sonia had expressed through a heartfelt Instagram post that Dodger had passed away in 2023, saying: “Thank you so much to all those who took a moment to remember dear Dodger and express their sympathies.

We’re deeply moved and astonished that our little pup, Dodger, has been embraced by countless individuals, not just here but all around the world. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

After about 20 years on television, Doc Martin ended its run in 2022; however, Martin hinted at a potential film continuation as early as this year.

A representative from one of the movie companies mentioned potential plans to create a movie adaptation of Doc Martin. When asked about this possibility, two years after wrapping up the 10th and last series, his response was open-ended – “It might not happen, but you never know for sure.

We’ve successfully produced a few full-length Christmas specials, lasting 90 and 120 minutes. This demonstrates our capability in creating longer shows, such as an extended version of Doc Martin. Therefore, we can confidently say that such a production is feasible.
