Martha Stewart SLAMS her ‘lazy’ Netflix documentary for focusing too much on her ‘stupid trial’
As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience under my apron, I can empathize with Martha Stewart’s predicament. It’s disheartening to see one’s life story, especially one as multifaceted and successful as hers, reduced to soundbites and sensationalism.
According to reports, Martha Stewart appears to be displeased with the Netflix documentary that portrays her extensive career as a lifestyle expert.
At the 2024 Retail Influencer CEO Forum last week, she mentioned that RJ Cutler, a filmmaker, had been unwilling to accept her criticisms, according to The Daily Beast’s report.
The businesswoman also complained that the movie does not capture what makes her tick.
As a lifestyle expert, I can empathize with the character, who felt exasperated because the movie seemed to excessively focus on her ordeal stemming from a misleading statement about a stock tip back in 2004 that eventually landed her in prison.
The movie, which was recently shown at the Toronto Film Festival, debuts on October 30.
She mentioned during her discussion with Joanna Coles from The Daily Beast that she generally avoids expressing displeasure in public, as it’s not beneficial for business. However, regarding her documentary, she admitted that she might express some criticism.
As a lifestyle advisor, I’d put it this way: Personally, the successful entrepreneur found it displeasing when the movie delved excessively into what she refers to as her “foolish court case.
Stewart added that felt ‘so unfair,’ she said.
Additionally, she found it intriguing that the film featured a conversation with ex-Manhattan U.S. Attorney and FBI Director James Comey.
Speaking passionately, I shared that there’s a snapshot of Comey in the documents, and he had said something along the lines of, “She’ll end up behind bars for lying, not for actually breaking the law—just some nonsense.
‘And [he doesn’t put] underneath, “Comey was fired for lying.”
In the year 2017, Donald Trump dismissed James Comey due to a broad spectrum of criticisms regarding his management of the Hillary Clinton email case and the probes into Russian meddling in the elections.
‘I would, as a documentarian, put that in,’ Stewart continued, ‘so that’s the laziness part.’
And she wishes she could have had more say.
‘I had a collaboration contract,’ she explained.
Initially, we were meant to work together, but later, he reserved the ultimate authority for making changes in the second part of the document. However, she suggested modifications, but the director refused to make any alterations.
Initially, Stewart got along well with him, but currently, things seem strained between them despite their joint promotion of the documentary.
“Martha’s latter part fails to acknowledge all our joint works,” Stewart pointed out.

It doesn’t seem right to me that they weren’t involved at all – it feels unfair, in my opinion, when it comes to the tale of my life. That was truly instrumental in shaping who I am today.
She might have a chance for retribution as Netflix has invited her to reprise the role again.
Following allegations from film critic Steve Pond of The Wrap that the previous model was reticent and uncooperative during the making of the movie, this new one has been introduced.
Pond pointed out that it appeared Martha chose not to discuss the sensitive episodes from her past, such as the time she was incarcerated, in her conversations.
Stewart comes off as uncomfortable in the documentary, it was also claimed.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but notice the intriguing trajectory of her journey – swiftly gliding over her triumphs yet lingering deeply on her missteps. The episode that has captivated my attention is the intense scrutiny surrounding her allegation of dishonesty in a stock trade. This led to a significant period of five months spent behind bars, a chapter she carries with her still.
The critic also pointed out she was tight lipped on her personal life.
She preferred not to discuss the conclusion of her marriage in detail, nor delve into the reasons behind her relationship with an Irish gentleman. Instead, she merely stated that it was “of no consequence.
