Martha Stewart doc director reveals her brutal phone call to him as he fires back at her criticism of ‘lazy’ film
As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of creative differences between subjects and filmmakers. However, the recent saga between Martha Stewart and RJ Cutler, director of her Netflix documentary, has taken the cake.
In a recent disclosure, the director of Martha Stewart’s latest Netflix documentary shared an intense conversation they had, where he defended himself against her criticisms regarding the film.
Stewart, who is 83 years old, took part in the Netflix film and gave numerous in-depth interviews for it, yet he’s openly criticized the final result in public.
She expressed dissatisfaction with the movie, finding it lacked effort and left many elements unexplored. To her disappointment, she intends to discuss with the streaming service the possibility of creating an extended or alternate version, which she refers to as “Version Two.
Currently, the director of the documentary, RJ Cutler, has spoken up about her comments, providing his perspective in a podcast hosted by Matthew Belloni titled “The Town”.
He shared that he dreams of someday making public the text conversations he had with her, and furthermore, mentioned that Martha openly communicated her reservations about the film through those messages.
Later on, Cutler recounted an amusing conversation where Stewart phoned him requesting a favor. He responded by saying, “Absolutely, Martha! I’d be delighted to help, but you must be kind to me!” To this, she replied, “Oh, forget it, I’ll ask someone else,” and hung up.
The director, known for crafting docuseries on figures like Anna Wintour, Billie Eilish, John Belushi, and Elton John in the past, openly discussed his artistic disagreements regarding the main subject of his recent movie titled “Martha.
He remarked, “After Martha watched the movie, she shared her opinions with me, and it didn’t come as a shock that she’d prefer a different one – since mine was clearly not hers.
Cutler contended, saying, ‘She provided me with her comments, and it appeared she was disappointed as I hadn’t implemented the adjustments she desired. However, this is part of the process.’
It requires great bravery for her to trust me, and I value that trust. As a gesture of respect, I’ll share the movie with her and discuss it with her. If she comes up with ideas I think are beneficial for the film I’m producing, I’ll gladly consider suggestions from everyone, including hers.
He was less receptive to the idea that the entire movie be scored with rap – a concept floated by Stewart, who is famously friendly with Snoop Dogg.
He acknowledged that it’s challenging to objectively evaluate these films as subjects, and expressed understanding for this process. However, being empathetic towards the subject does not necessarily imply that they are controlling the film.
Cutler made his comments following Stewart’s candid expression of her harsh criticisms regarding the movie, during an interview with The New York Times.
Regarding the final sequences where I seemed to be an elderly woman wandering alone in the garden, bent over and stooped, I strongly recommended that they be removed. However, he chose not to comply with my suggestion. This was her firm stance on the matter.
‘But again, he [R.J.] doesn’t even mention why — that I can live through that and still work seven days a week,’ she quipped.
Martha found herself quite annoyed with R.J.’s choice of the least flattering camera angle, even though she had asked him repeatedly to switch it.
She stated, “He had three camera options for me, but he insisted on using the least flattering perspective. I told him, ‘Please opt for a different angle! That one is not the most favorable. You have three cameras at your disposal; why not use another?’ However, he refused to adjust it.
Beyond her initial concerns, Martha also voiced dissatisfaction with the documentary’s musical selection. She admitted that she felt rap music would have been a better choice than the classical score that R.J. opted for.
Apart from feeling dismayed, it was additionally disappointing for her that numerous scenes were eliminated, encompassing insights about her work with Martha Stewart magazine, her cherished moments with her grandchildren, her passion for travel, and anecdotes regarding how her attorney Alan Dershowitz would flirt with her in the 1960s while she was still married.
Yet, she mentioned, “The first half of this documentary captivates me greatly. It delves into areas that most people are unaware of, and that’s exactly why I appreciate it.
Nevertheless, with all the criticism she’s faced, it appears that the influential figure is eager to produce another movie, hinting at her plans during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show hosted by Jimmy Fallon.
When Fallon inquired whether she was satisfied with the documentary, she confessed that she had reached out to Netflix for another one, mainly due to the significant amount of content that was omitted.
Stewart mentioned that the documentary was acceptable, but it lacked depth, so he plans to discuss with them about potentially creating a second version with him, as told to Fallon.
She mentioned that there’s a lot more to her story since she has lived for quite a while. She suggested that perhaps some good details might have been overlooked in our conversation.
Additionally, Fallon inquired about her feelings towards the procedure, pointing out instances where she instructed the director to omit specific elements, and it appeared that Stewart found this aspect unpleasant.
She expressed that she wasn’t fond of it. Sharing feelings and visiting psychiatrists isn’t her cup of tea, and she dislikes the intense focus on delving into details, as she put it.
- Fallon insisted, ‘Yes, but that’s what we wanna see,’ as she added, ‘I know, but that came out. So good stuff came out. He got some juice.’
