Martha Luttrell dies at 80: Ex-ICM agent succumbs to pancreatic cancer

As an ardent admirer and follower of the captivating world of showbiz, I stand in awe of the indomitable spirit and unparalleled dedication of Martha Luttrell. Born on Halloween, she seemed to have been destined for greatness right from the start, and her life was nothing short of a cinematic masterpiece.

As a seasoned lifestyle consultant, I’m saddened to share the news that Martha Luttrell, a renowned talent agent who graced the industry with her presence, passed away on Monday at the venerable age of 80. Notably, she was the guiding force behind some of Hollywood’s brightest stars, including Susan Sarandon, the late Sam Shepard, and Waylon Jennings.

Holly Goldberg Sloan informed Variety on Tuesday that Luttrell had passed away in Calabasas, California, following a struggle with pancreatic cancer.

Luttrell played a significant role in shaping the careers of several well-known artists, including Sarandon, the 78-year-old Academy Award recipient, who hadn’t issued any public comments regarding his demise on social media by Tuesday evening as word of his death circulated.

Represented by Luttrell were a variety of individuals, including actors like Stephen Rea, Judy Davis, Dereck Joubert and Beverly Joubert, as well as musician Don Was.

In my role as a devoted advocate, I had the privilege of standing alongside notable filmmakers such as Julie Taymor, Paul Weiland, Martin Campbell, Mick Jackson, Tony Bill, and Jon Amiel, as per the reports from a trusted source.

Initially, Luttrell found her footing in the entertainment industry by serving as a receptionist at Capitol Records, according to Variety’s report.

Born on Halloween, October 31, 1944, in Vancouver, Canada, Luttrell kick-started her journey in the entertainment industry immediately following her high school graduation, as per reports published on Tuesday by Deadline.

She spent time working with renowned movie director Mike Nichols, based in New York City, for the 1973 production of ‘The Day of the Dolphin’. Later on, she relocated to Los Angeles, as reported by Variety.

At The Robinson Agency, Luttrell served as an assistant to the late talent agent Bill Robinson. This role allowed her to refine her professional abilities, and ultimately, she advanced to a partnership position within the company.

In 1983, the firm then called Robinson/Luttrell and Associates was purchased by ICM. For a period of 25 years following this acquisition, Luttrell remained employed with them, functioning as an agent.

Berg retired in 2008 and relocated to Aspen, Colorado, Deadline reported.

In his statement, Jeff Berg, former chairman and CEO of ICM, expressed deep admiration for Martha’s achievements at the agency and for her clients. He noted that after collaborating with her for a long time, they would certainly feel her absence.

In the management sector of the entertainment industry, Berg recognized Luttrell as a pioneer, blazing trails for women.

During the early stages of her career, it was uncommon to see many women holding senior roles within talent agencies, as shared by Berg with Variety on Tuesday. However, Martha significantly impacted and expanded prospects for women, leaving behind an impressive and enduring legacy.

According to Goldberg Sloan, Luttrell was a dedicated champion for her clients, had a keen eye for materials, and was relentless when it came to negotiating deals. Furthermore, they mentioned that Luttrell used to host grand Halloween parties, as these celebrations coincided with her birthday.

As an ardent devotee, I’ve had the privilege to be deeply immersed in the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Not only have I been graced with membership, but I’ve also held a revered position as the chair for their Agent Group – a role that I cherish, as detailed by Variety.

According to Deadline, she was additionally part of the advisory board for the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television.

Luttrell leaves behind his nephew Peter Luttrell and his wife Dr. Stephanie White, along with their two kids; as well as his nieces Heather and Wendy, and his goddaughter Francesca.

Instead of making donations directly to her memory, consider contributing to the Aspen Community Foundation as a tribute. Future announcements will reveal details about a celebration honoring her life.
