He’s the groom from Married At First Sight who’s become known for his outspoken views, and he’s definitely stirred up some drama.
And Tyson Gordon revealed a very different side this week during an expansive podcast interview.
Thirty-year-old Tyson was recently on the Dangerous Ideas With Deano podcast, hosted by former Married at First Sight stars Dean Wells and Harrison Boon.
In the wide-ranging interview, Tyson admitted to having to steal food to survive.
‘We lived in a multimillion-dollar house – I was a rich kid growing up,’ Tyson said.
‘You don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone.’
Before enlisting, Tyson was stuck in a low-paying security guard job, barely making enough money to cover his expenses.
Even though Tyson had his father’s support – they all lived together after his parents divorced – he said life was really difficult, especially after getting kicked out of school for fighting.
‘I didn’t know what I was doing with my life,’ he said.
I was expelled from school, and things got so difficult that I even had to steal food from Woolworths sometimes, just to survive because I had no money.
Tyson acknowledged he grew up with advantages, but explained that his family’s financial situation worsened significantly after his parents divorced.
‘I was living with my dad but, after the divorce, he lost almost everything,’ he said.
We were living in a really run-down place in Southport. He was having a difficult time personally, but he always made sure to be there for us.
Dean was stunned and asked, “So you’re saying you went from being a wealthy person, living in a large house, to having to steal things just to get by?”
Tyson acknowledged the report, stating it was a necessary action, though he didn’t elaborate.
‘This was a long time ago but it had to be done,’ he said.
I was going through a period of self-discovery, still figuring out who I was as a young person – I was only 17. Luckily, my dad was there for me.
Harrison playfully asked the groom what he would steal if he could, and Tyson jokingly answered, ‘Chicken breast,’ while smiling.
‘But you’ve got to cook that up,’ Harrison replied. ‘Don’t you want something already made?
‘If I’m going to do it, do it properly – get some good quality protein,’ he joked.
This happened after Tyson unexpectedly left the show on Sunday’s Commitment Ceremony. His departure followed a conversation with the experts, where his wife, Stephanie Marshall, 32, expressed her disagreement with his opinions on same-sex couples.
Stephanie explained that she’d like Tyson to be more mindful of his words and how they affect others. She shared that two of her close friends are gay, and both are participating in the experiment as Chris and Sam.
