Steve Powell from Married At First Sight has shared an unexpected link to a famous person, a connection that surprised many fans.

I knew there was something special about him, something… iconic! It’s just… everything makes sense now. I’m officially losing it, but in the best way possible!
Steve recently shared a surprising family connection: he’s second cousins with a famous English football player, revealing the news in an interview with the Daily Mail.
Steve shared that his family history links him to the Beckhams – his grandmother’s maiden name was Beckham.
‘He’s my second cousin,’ Steve said.
My mother’s mother was a Beckham before she married my grandfather. David and I were both born in Essex, in East London, and only seven days apart, he explained.
Steve, born on April 23rd, noted that Beckham was born just a short time later on May 2nd. He found the close timing amusing, considering their family connection.
‘It’s quite a famous connection, I guess,’ he admitted.
‘It’s a very cool one to have, I must admit.’
You know, I’ve heard some interesting stories! Steve tells me he’s never actually met Victoria Beckham, but he did have a quick encounter with David when they were both younger. It was just a brief moment, but he remembers crossing paths with the football star back in his teenage years.
He recalled meeting the person again around age 16 while back in London, but by then, the person was already a professional soccer player and frequently traveling.
‘He wasn’t really around like a regular kid.’
Steve joked that Beckham clearly scored the genetic jackpot among the cousins.
‘I think he got the looks and the money, unfortunately, out of the cousins,’ he laughed.
This news arrives as Steve works through his connection with Rebecca on the show, and audiences see their relationship develop after a lovely and optimistic wedding.
Reflecting on their first meeting, Steve said he felt an immediate sense of calm and optimism.
‘We had such a nice day. Our families got along and we had a really nice connection,’ he said.
‘It gave me happy memories watching it back.’
Steve confessed he wasn’t immediately drawn to Rebecca physically, but he soon fell for her kind and engaging personality.
You know, as someone who thinks a lot about connection and what draws people together, I’ve always said personality is key. For me, kindness, authenticity, and a good sense of humor are incredibly attractive qualities – and when I meet someone who radiates those things, it’s instantly noticeable. It really makes a first impression!
Steve openly shared why, after being single for over twenty years, he decided to participate in the experiment.
‘You get to 50 and you get a bit lonely, to be honest,’ he said.
Even though I have children, I still hoped to find someone to share my life with. I didn’t want to wait until I was older, like 60, and feel like there wasn’t enough time left to build new memories with a partner.
So, everyone’s wondering if David and Victoria Beckham are watching me on Married at First Sight? Well, I’m hearing whispers from back home in the UK that they might be! It’s pretty surreal to think my life is being broadcast and news is even reaching them!
‘My family in London have already seen clips,’ he revealed.
I don’t know if David and Victoria Beckham actually tune in, but honestly, you’d be surprised by who does watch the show! It’s amazing the people who get hooked.
Steve says he’s not seeking fame, but he acknowledges that being connected to the Beckhams has surprisingly changed things as he starts appearing on reality TV.
‘Who knows?’ he said. ‘Maybe one day we’ll catch up.’
Right now, Steve is concentrating on how things develop with Rebecca and wants to show Australia his true self.
‘I just want people to see me for who I am,’ he said.
‘I’m genuine, I’m kind, and what you see is what you get.’
