Married At First Sight’s Melissa Akbay reveals ‘vile’ trolling left her ‘too scared to go outside’ and led to crippling insecurity about her EARS – following split from Luke Fourniotis

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how damaging online negativity can be, and unfortunately, my friend Mel Akbay from Married At First Sight has been experiencing a lot of it lately. She’s bravely spoken out about the intense online hate she’s received, and it’s been so severe that she was honestly afraid to even leave her house. It’s a really tough situation, and I’m glad she’s sharing her experience.

Okay, so I was completely glued to the TV when everything with that 2026 bride and Luke happened. Honestly, it was the most talked-about thing all season! Seeing their wedding fall apart right before our eyes was just… shocking. I couldn’t look away, and everyone I knew was talking about it! It was a total train wreck, but I was obsessed.

Oh my gosh, you guys, she just did this incredible interview with the Daily Mail! She was so honest, she actually said watching old footage of herself was ‘tough’ and even ‘traumatising’! It was so brave of her to admit that, and honestly, it just makes me love her even more. It’s like she’s letting us see the real her, and it’s so raw and emotional. I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been!

Mel said she finally felt relieved after a difficult experience, but was surprised and upset by how she appeared on television.

‘Watching it back, I was like, I was the most naïve person in the world,’ she said.

I definitely take responsibility for my actions, but the issue is that people focused on my mistakes and presented that as the whole story.

As the show aired, the backlash spiralled so quickly she says she stopped leaving her house.

She said she’s been too afraid to leave her house for the past three weeks, ever since the show started airing.

‘People think they know Mel from MAFS. Mel from MAFS isn’t a real person. I am a real person.’

Mel admitted she’d applied almost on a dare, drawn in by the website’s claim that they could find her the perfect match.

‘I just wanted to take a leap. I was like, you know, I’m single. Why not try?’ she explained.

‘When you go through the process… you really believe, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to fall in love.’

Her hopeful feelings instantly disappeared when she walked down the aisle and saw that Luke wasn’t there waiting for her.

She explained that when she went on stage and didn’t see Luke, she immediately worried she’d become the laughingstock of the show.

‘My family’s here. My best friends are here. What are they going to think?’

Luke finally arrived, cheerfully dancing in, but Mel confessed she felt more hurt and embarrassed than angry about his tardiness.

‘I wasn’t angry, angry, but I was upset,’ she said.

‘I was humiliated.’

Even though things got off to a difficult beginning, Mel explained she really did attempt to connect with Luke. She even shared a surprising moment nobody watching saw: she once gave him gum because he’s always chewing!

Luke is a big fan of chewing gum, so I bought him a three-pack of his favorite. “He goes through it so quickly!” she said with a laugh.

But when it came to chemistry, Mel says she couldn’t force what wasn’t there.

She admitted that when she saw Luke walking towards her, she felt surprisingly indifferent.

He’s not typically who I go for, but I don’t find him unattractive. I recognize Luke is good-looking, but I just wasn’t feeling a connection with him.

She also didn’t shy away from a truth that has followed her all season.

‘I never wanted to lead him on,’ she said.

‘I wasn’t into him… can you imagine kissing someone that you don’t have feelings for?’

Mel claimed her earliest weeks were fuelled by panic and a feeling she couldn’t escape.

‘I genuinely didn’t want to be there. Like I wanted to leave and I felt like I couldn’t,’ she said.

Feeling stuck and unable to escape a difficult situation can lead to depression and negatively impact your mental health.

After the first commitment ceremony, Luke persuaded her to try for another week, and things briefly started to go well for them.

She said they had a nice week, spending time together by going out to eat, watching movies, and taking walks.

But she soon realised the connection was friendship, not romance, and she couldn’t continue.

She explained that she wasn’t trying to become friends with Luke, and she couldn’t force herself to pretend she liked him when she didn’t.

The stalking controversy – and the ‘horror soundtrack’ edit

Mel also spoke about the issue caused by a story from her original audition video. The video reappeared during the show and led to a lot of criticism directed at her.

She stated she doesn’t find stalking amusing and strongly disapproves of it, adding that she wishes she hadn’t shared the story in the way she did.

She stated the event occurred when she was seventeen and out with friends, and she was deeply upset by its portrayal in the show.

She explained they played a really dramatic, scary movie soundtrack while she was being filmed, which made her feel like she looked like the main character from the show ‘You’.

‘And I’m sorry if I triggered anyone… because I don’t think stalking is funny.

‘I deleted my TikTok. I deleted my Facebook – the hate that crossed the line.’

After seeing the memes and online reactions, Mel decided to take a break from all social media.

‘I had to take a step off social media. I had to,’ she said.

‘I deleted my TikTok, I deleted my Facebook’

She claimed strangers were DMing her, and the abuse didn’t stop with her.

‘Not only was I getting trolled, my friends and my family were getting trolled,’ she said.

‘It was so hectic.’

She shared that one moment was particularly hurtful: a clip of a podcaster repeatedly using a highly offensive slur against her and making fun of her based on short segments from the show.

‘That was hard for me,’ she said.

She explained how hurtful it was that people focused on and criticized her smallest features, like how often she blinked or the shape of her ears.

She admitted she’d never paid attention to how often she blinked until she started noticing it while online, which then annoyed her.

‘It’s because I’m anxious.’

People keep commenting on my ears, so I started styling my hair to hide them—even during yoga!

Mel revealed she’d previously considered cosmetic surgery, but couldn’t justify the price.

‘I was going to get my ears pinned back, but it’s like seven to $8,000,’ she said.

The ‘hypocrisy’ claim – ‘I got more hate than people who smashed wine glasses’

Mel argued that the intense negativity directed towards her has been far too extreme compared to the situation.

Throughout the 13 seasons of Married at First Sight, we’ve seen contestants engage in abusive behavior, including physical outbursts like breaking and throwing glasses, and sharing inappropriate photos, she explained.

Looking back at everything, I actually received more negativity for simply not being attracted to someone.

She also pointed to the ‘irony’ of being branded ‘evil’ by people leaving cruel comments.

She noted the irony of being called evil by people who were simultaneously writing incredibly mean and hurtful things about her.

The experts, the couch – and ‘I was traumatised’

Mel said her first commitment ceremony was incredibly difficult, and what viewers saw on TV didn’t even begin to show how tough it really was.

‘In real life it was 10 times worse,’ she said.

‘I was traumatised by that couch session.’

She criticized the experts for being overly harsh towards the women involved and pointed out that there seemed to be a different set of expectations for them compared to others in similar situations.

‘I truly believe that… the attack is always skewed to the women,’ she said.

The pink backlash – and why she stopped wearing her favourite colour

Mel recently shared that she stopped wearing pink because she was teased online for being seen as overly feminine or a ‘princess’.

‘One of my coping mechanisms… I don’t wear pink anymore,’ she said.

‘I just got so much hate for it… I can’t say anything ’cause I can’t win.’

No bad blood with Luke – ‘If I saw him today, I’d give him a hug’

I’ve been following Mel for a while now, and through everything that’s happened, she keeps saying she doesn’t hate Luke. She really wants everyone to know she never meant to make him look like the bad guy – that wasn’t her intention at all.

‘I don’t think Luke is a bad person,’ she said.

‘In my vox that never was shown… I didn’t say that much s*** about him.’

She claimed she often said positive things about him, but they weren’t aired.

People kept asking me if I thought Luke was handsome, and I’d always say, ‘Yes, he is, but I’m not attracted to him,’ she explained.

The last time they spoke was at the reunion, where she said they embraced.

‘For me, there’s no bad blood with Luke,’ she said.

‘If I saw him today, I’d just give him a hug.’

You know, there’s been a lot of talk about a moment with Luke and his sisters, and I wanted to clear something up. There’s been a bit of editing going around that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. What actually happened was I did go over to greet them, but the footage shows I briefly shook my head – not in refusal, but more of a surprised reaction before I went over. It’s frustrating when things are taken out of context like that!

She explained that she went to greet his sisters and gave them a hug, adding that she always makes a point of acknowledging someone’s family.

The dinner party chaos – and being ‘frozen like a statue’

Mel didn’t limit her comments to her own experiences on the show. She also shared her thoughts on the dramatic conflicts happening this season, like the fight between Gia Fleur and Bec Zacharia. She explained that she’s stayed neutral to maintain her friendships with both of them.

‘I don’t like drama,’ she said.

She recalled being physically frozen during one dinner party as the table erupted.

‘You know how it’s like flight, fright, freeze. I’m freeze,’ she said.

‘I was just kind of looking around and being like, ‘Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.’

Mel also said she regrets not speaking up more as the cast faces backlash for staying silent.

‘For someone like me who’s not confrontational, it’s not a fun environment to be in,’ she said.

‘I regret it’ – and the heartbreaking reason why

In what was likely her most vulnerable moment, Mel confessed she wished she hadn’t participated in the show, not for her own sake, but because of the impact it’s had on her family.

‘The hardest part about all of this is seeing how upset it’s been my family,’ she said.

She shared that her grandmother was overjoyed to see her on television, and even learned how to use streaming services and social media just to follow along.

‘My grandma was so excited… she downloaded 9Now… she even got Instagram,’ Mel said.

What really bothers me is that her Instagram is completely filled with content from Married at First Sight, so she’s going to be exposed to a lot of negativity directed at Mel.

Where to now – therapy, resilience and one message for trolls

Mel is now working with a psychologist and focusing on recovery after a very frightening few weeks, as she described it.

‘My coping strategies… have been speaking to a psychologist regularly,’ she said.

She’s also trying to stop hiding.

She told me not to retreat to her room, explaining that it would actually be harmful to her well-being.

Despite the pain, she said the experience has forced her to toughen up.

‘I’m so much more resilient now,’ she said.

And she had one message for the people who’ve piled on.

She stated she would never post hurtful comments online or criticize someone’s looks or personality.

People will leave a quick comment and then immediately move on, but I keep replaying it in my head. It feels wrong to treat someone badly simply because they didn’t have a crush on someone else.
