Married At First Sight’s Mel Schilling Shares Her Shocking Bowel Cancer Symptoms
In a recent disclosure, Mel Schilling from “Married At First Sight” shared about the painful signs of bowel cancer that she neglected before her diagnosis in December 2023.
A specialist in relationships, aged 53, mentioned that she had been enduring substantial discomfort prior to medical professionals finding a 5-centimeter growth within her ascending colon.
She shared with 9Entertainment that she experienced severe exhaustion, mysterious weight reduction, total lack of hunger, persistent difficulty in bowel movements, and eventually, intense stomach pain.
Reflecting upon it now, the experience felt remarkably similar to labor contractions during childbirth. I attribute it all to a hectic, overloaded year and concluded that what I truly required was some rest.
As your trusted lifestyle guide, I’m taking a significant stride in my mission by joining forces with Bowel Cancer Australia and Kleenex Australia. Together, we’ve kick-started an inspiring movement that encourages Australians to embrace the slightly uncomfortable yet crucial step: regular inspection of bowel movements for potential warning signs of illness. Let’s prioritize health together!

She expressed on social media that the most significant insight she gained is that had she heeded her body’s cues, acknowledged its signals, she could have spared herself a great deal of discomfort and hardship.
Mel encouraged Australians to be aware of these signs: Bleeding from the rectum, a shift in bowel movements, unexplained weight loss, unusual fatigue, and any noticeable abdominal lumps or swelling.
The Australian reality star, who was born there, expressed her intention to break the stigma surrounding an awkward subject in order to boost cancer awareness.
She wrote, ‘It seems that the main problem is our reluctance to discuss bowel movements. But hey, we’re Australians! If we can freely discuss sex and finance, why not include a bit of talk about our bodily functions too?’
Back in January, Mel shared details about her health experiences during an interview with Daily Mail Australia.
Mel shared her experience after being diagnosed with bowel cancer amidst her bustling journey from London to Sydney. She expressed that this diagnosis significantly altered her outlook on life.
‘I wasn’t listening to my body,’ she admitted.
Initially, I assumed my discomfort – experiencing bloating, poor sleep, and loss of appetite – was simply from jet lag. Discovering that it was actually a tumor came as quite an unexpected revelation.

Fortunately, Mel’s is on the mend and is still in remission.
She expressed feeling exceptionally vigorous on that occasion, as she had reclaimed her vitality and zest for life – the renewed enthusiasm in her stride was palpable. Now, it seemed, there was nothing to hold her back.
Mel also revealed the pivotal role her daughter Maddie, 10, played in her recovery.
She turned into a source of encouragement for me, more like a mini-cheer squad. On days when I found it hard to get out of bed, she’d entertain me with performances – singing and dancing. That was her method of dealing with things. It provided such a significant boost to my spirits, she noted.
Ever since she openly shared her bowel cancer diagnosis, Mel has been dedicated to increasing understanding about this condition, with a specific focus on younger individuals.
After moving to the United Kingdom, Mel has established London as her new residence, where she lives with her husband Gareth and their daughter Maddie who is now comfortably adjusted at school and flourishing.
