He first gained attention as the somewhat divisive ‘momma’s boy’ on Married at First Sight, known for his unusual sense of humor. He later reinvented himself as a model after dramatically changing his physique.
Joel Moses, the 31-year-old who surprised everyone by joining the show, has revealed some personal details about his life before the experiment began.
‘I’ve always struggled with my weight and body image,’ he told Daily Mail.
Most of my life, I’ve struggled with being overweight. I used to have a problem with overeating.
Joel, known for being very blunt on the dating show, followed up with a self-deprecating joke: ‘I’ve never met anyone who enjoys food more than I do!’
The musician shared that he constantly thinks about food, admitting he has a never-ending hunger.
He explained that 2019 was a really low point for him, as he weighed 105 kilos – officially classified as obese according to the BMI scale.
Following his recent breakup, the groom from Married at First Sight revealed he lost 20 kilograms. However, he previously believed it was impossible for him to get in shape, given his history of difficulty losing weight.
Joel spent $20,000 on liposuction, hoping to lose weight, but unfortunately, he regained it all. It was a disappointing outcome.
‘I then hit rock bottom again and really decided to change for good,’ he said.
It took a little over a year after that for me to lose the weight, get in shape, and go from being an Uber driver to a signed model with Wink Models.
‘It’s one of my proudest achievements for sure. Haven’t looked back since.’
Joel was matched with 27-year-old receptionist Juliette Chae on Monday’s episode of MAFS.
And it seems that the groom feels most at home when he is exploring his quirkier side.
Joel unexpectedly disrupted Monday night’s wedding ceremony when he revealed to his bride, Juliette Chae, that he had been previously married.
Once Juliette finished her vows, Joel took his turn, but his were filled with awkward jokes that made many guests uncomfortable.
‘My mother says I’m perfect, but I most certainly disagree,’ Joel told his new bride.
‘I’ve actually got many flaws – carpet, tiles, wood – you name it, baby.’
Joel made things even more uncomfortable by asking, ‘Who is this incredibly well-groomed, stylish, charming, attractive, yet surprisingly clueless former Uber driver-turned-model who doesn’t know a washing machine from a dryer?’
He ended his vows by warning Juliette that he would clear her wardrobe of unsightly items.
He said he wanted to know everything about her – the things that made her unique, her hopes and worries, even her little flaws and fashion choices.
Juliette initially seemed excited, but her mood clearly changed for the worse after the speeches, turning what she’d hoped would be a positive experience into something upsetting.
‘I’m p***ed off,’ she told producers.
I really opened myself up, believing something genuine was happening, and now I’m feeling exposed. It’s hard to believe someone would say something so hurtful.
I’m hoping to meet my soulmate, but I’m starting to feel like this experience has all been for show and isn’t genuine.
Joel tried to tell his wife he was just kidding with his speech, but she stood up and walked away, leaving him scrambling to think of something else to say.
