Despite the sad news of Mel Schilling’s passing announced on Tuesday, Wednesday night’s episode of Married At First Sight still aired.
Channel Nine showed a tribute to the relationship expert both before and after the show, but some viewers still felt it wasn’t enough.
A lot of viewers thought the show shouldn’t have aired on Wednesday, feeling it was disrespectful to the star.
Even though Mel finished filming the series last year, she’s still appearing in new episodes, and played a big role in the Dinner Party scenes on Wednesday.
‘Should be cancelled tonight out of respect for Mel Schilling,’ wrote one person on X.
One more chimed in: ‘It feels weird to go back to regular scheduled programming.’
‘Almost wrong watching tonight’s episode after last night’s news,’ said another.
One viewer expressed a wish that the show not air tonight, stating it would be a sign of respect for Mel and her loved ones.
Someone shared that the news of Mel Schilling’s passing made watching the show particularly difficult. They described her as a kind and brave person.
However, not everyone agreed. One person felt that showing her as she was at her best was a sign of respect.
‘Whilst I agree, I don’t think Mel would have wanted that,’ responded someone else on social media.
Another agreed: ‘They announced before the program that it was what Mel had wanted.’
John Aiken led Channel Nine’s tribute to Schilling after her death at age 54.
Before Wednesday’s show, Clay Aiken became emotional as he spoke fondly about his colleague and close friend.
It’s with a truly heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of Mel Schilling, a wonderful colleague and dear friend to all of us in the MAFS family. We’re all deeply saddened by this loss.
She had a wonderful ability to brighten any space with her joyful personality and infectious smile. Being around her, especially on set, always boosted everyone’s spirits, as Aiken explained.
She was a delightful person who brought happiness, laughter, and a genuine warmth that everyone enjoyed. Being around her was a true pleasure.
She was a natural leader and truly inspiring. She didn’t waste time complaining, but instead, faced challenges head-on and simply got the job done.
‘Someone that has meant so much to all of us, and it’s not fair.
‘Married At First Sight won’t be the same without her.
My heart goes out to Gareth and their daughter, Maddie, and I want to take a moment to remember Mel.
‘We love you.’
Channel Nine then aired a solemn message dedicating the following episode to Mel’s memory.
We’re thankful for her kindness, honesty, and thoughtful perspective. She was a cherished part of our team and will always be considered a member of the Married At First Sight family.
