Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling’s heartbreaking family sacrifice in her final years

Details have emerged about a deeply personal sacrifice Mel Schilling, the Married At First Sight expert who tragically passed away on Tuesday at 54 after a battle with bowel cancer, made for her family in recent years.

The popular relationship advisor moved to London with her family in 2021 to work on the UK version of Married at First Sight. However, for several months each year, she continued to travel back to Sydney to appear on the Australian version of the show.

Honestly, it broke my heart to think about it. She was everywhere, constantly traveling for work, and it meant being away from her family – Gareth and little Maddie, who’s ten now – for what felt like forever. It was amazing seeing her succeed, of course, but juggling that incredible career with being a mom and wife? That took a serious toll, constantly having to pack up and leave them behind. I just worried about them all the time.

In September 2024, a year after being diagnosed with cancer, Mel shared with her fans how her career was affecting her personally.

It’s so tough seeing them back in the UK, a really bittersweet moment because saying goodbye is always hard. But knowing it’s only six or seven weeks this time helps. I’ve definitely handled longer separations before – we’ve been apart for three months at a stretch in the past, so I know we can get through this.

She explained that her busy work on both the Australian and American versions of Married at First Sight often meant she was away from her husband and daughter for several months at a time.

Mel has been part of Married At First Sight Australia since 2016, and has shared that she often filmed while experiencing significant pain, but continued on with the show anyway.

She told Yahoo Lifestyle that she experienced intense pain at the reunion dinner and spent the entire photoshoot forcing a smile and trying to endure it.

She added that she first noticed the pain during filming its 11th series in 2024.

I initially dismissed what was happening, thinking it was just jet lag. I honestly believed I was simply overworking myself, traveling too much, and neglecting my health. It never occurred to me that it could be anything more serious, she explained.

This follows John Aiken’s sharing of heartfelt details about the last moments he spent with his colleague Mel before she passed away.

The 55-year-old relationship expert told A Current Affair that he was able to connect with her and express his feelings for her, and explain her importance to others.

Aiken told Mel that he loved her and that she had ‘made a difference.’

Aiken explained that she had made a significant impact on people globally, as she shared with the news program.

‘I took her husband an Irish whiskey, and we drank that. She had some memories.’

John explained that he saw Mel for a final time last week, just days before she died.

He described her as radiant and captivating, saying she had an infectious energy and a stunning, glamorous presence.

John hosted Channel Nine’s special segment honoring the relationship expert before Wednesday’s episode of Married at First Sight.

During a very emotional moment, Aiken struggled to hold back tears while speaking fondly about his colleague and close friend.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mel Schilling, a beloved colleague and friend to everyone at Married at First Sight.

She was a truly delightful person who brought a lot of fun, joy, and genuine warmth to everything she did. Her authenticity made her a joy to be around, and Married At First Sight just won’t feel the same without her.

Mel’s husband, Gareth, shared the sad news on Tuesday that the dating expert had passed away shortly after disclosing her cancer had spread to her brain.

In a lengthy statement, he spoke of her love for him and their daughter Madison.

Mel led the judging panel on the Australian version of the show for 12 seasons and also featured as a personality on five seasons of the UK show on Channel 4.

She previously shared that she would be taking a break from filming to focus on her family and well-being.
