Melissa Akbay, who appeared on Married At First Sight, has been seen looking sad in Sydney as her TV marriage falls apart.
Just one week into the new reality show ‘Nine,’ 28-year-old Melissa is already being labeled a ‘villain’ by many viewers due to how she’s treated groom Luke Fourniotis, 30.
The 28-year-old communications specialist looked sad and lonely while shopping alone during a break from filming.
Melissa dressed casually for the outing, wearing a relaxed-fit pink cardigan over a white t-shirt.
She completed her outfit with wide-leg blue jeans that flared at the ankles and a pair of pale pink sneakers.
Melissa completed her look with a black and white canvas bag worn over her shoulder and large black headphones.
The reality TV star was spotted enjoying a small bag of chips while walking around town, and her future husband wasn’t with her.
She briefly visited a nearby supermarket and bought groceries, probably to eat by herself in her Sydney apartment.
Melissa and Luke’s wedding didn’t start smoothly – Luke was late because he accidentally left the wedding rings behind.
He also gave Melissa the ‘ick’ from the outset, chewing gum while his bride recited her vows.
Even their honeymoon on Louth Island didn’t help, as the bride made Luke sleep on the couch.
At Monday night’s first dinner party with the other brides, she made it clear she wasn’t enthusiastic about her future husband.
To make matters worse, she also decisively beat Luke in Tuesday’s photo ranking, putting him in second place after Grayson McIvor.
Melissa told Luke that if people were judging based on looks alone, he’d likely be their pick.
I’m attracted to you – you’re in good shape and clearly put effort into how you look. However, I’m being honest and letting you know that my feelings for Grayson are stronger, so I’m choosing to pursue him instead.
A heartbroken Luke told producers it was difficult to process Mel’s shock decision.
To be honest, that really set me back. I’m feeling incredibly insecure at the moment, he admitted.
He later told Daily Mail that he was shocked by Mel’s actions as they weakened the relationship.
‘Being the only groom not ranked first wasn’t easy,’ he said.
In a relationship, making your partner feel safe and loved is important. Letting them know they’re your top priority is a simple way to achieve that.
Okay, so Luke basically said that even if Melissa didn’t totally see him as ‘the one’ on the down-low, getting turned down publicly? It really hurt him. Like, a lot. It’s just… knowing she wasn’t choosing him, and everyone else knowing it too? Brutal. I feel so bad for him, honestly.
He explained that even if I wasn’t his top choice, simply prioritizing him sometimes would have been nice. It would have made him feel valued and safe, but that never occurred.
But Luke insists the ranking itself wasn’t the biggest blow.
‘The main thing was she didn’t even let me in as a friend,’ he said.
It would have been much nicer if we’d been able to stay friends throughout this experiment.
A sneak peek at Wednesday’s episode shows that Melissa and Luke’s strained relationship is about to get even worse.
Melissa sat down with Luke, explaining she needed to talk to him about something important and urgent.
Mel was upset because Luke’s sisters had been leaving negative comments about her on social media.
It appears the relationship is on the verge of collapse, as he packed his bags and stayed at a friend’s house on Tuesday night.
Married At First Sight continues Wednesday at 7:30pm on Nine.
