Married At First Sight airs heartbreaking tribute to Mel Schilling after her death at age 54 as John Aiken remembers the relationship expert as an ‘inspiration’: ‘It’s not fair’

Following the passing of relationship expert Mel Schilling at age 54, John Aiken of Channel Nine has publicly honored her life and work.

Before Wednesday’s show, Clay Aiken became emotional as he spoke fondly about his close friend and colleague.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mel Schilling, a beloved member of the Married at First Sight team. Her loss is felt greatly by all of us.

‘She was someone that could light up a room, she was full of joy, had a huge smile, and whenever she was on set, everyone lifted,’ Aiken continued.

She was a delightful person who brought a lot of joy, laughter, and genuine warmth to everyone around her. We all truly enjoyed being with her.

She was a natural leader and truly inspiring. She didn’t complain; she simply worked hard and faced challenges head-on.

‘Someone that has meant so much to all of us, and it’s not fair.

‘Married At First Sight won’t be the same without her.

My heart goes out to Gareth and their daughter, Maddie, during this difficult time. Let’s also remember Mel with fondness.

‘We love you.’

Channel Nine then aired a solemn message dedicating the following episode to Mel’s memory.

I’m absolutely gutted! She was just… amazing. So genuine and insightful, and honestly, she felt like family to all of us on Married At First Sight. We’re all so thankful for everything she brought, and she’ll always be one of us, no matter what. It just doesn’t feel the same without her warmth!

On Wednesday’s Today show, 55-year-old Aiken publicly shared his grief for the first time about the death of Mel, describing the profound impact of losing his close companion.

John, clearly upset, shared that it had been an incredibly difficult day, not just for him, but for everyone involved with the show and those close to the person affected. He described the situation as tragic and happening very suddenly.

John shared that he was able to see Mel and her husband, Gareth, shortly before she passed away. He described the visit as a deeply moving and cherished experience.

‘It was a very aggressive cancer, unfortunately,’ he said, fighting back tears.

You know, one of the things I always admired about Mel was her incredible spirit. She just never let things get her down – no complaining, ever! Honestly, whether she was working on a film or going about her everyday life, she brought this amazing energy and positivity to everything she did. She was truly a bright spot in any room.

John fondly remembered Mel as someone who led by example and always offered sensible advice. He said he felt lucky to have collaborated with her for ten years.

He said she was his close collaborator and supported him every step of the way as the show quickly became very popular.

I really relied on her, and things won’t be the same without her. It’s just difficult to accept that she’s gone.

He also spoke of her deep belief in the show’s mission and the couples who took part.

She was a true believer in love and dedicated to helping her clients find it. She really wanted to make their dreams come true,” he explained.

Mel’s husband, Gareth, shared the sad news on Tuesday that the dating expert had passed away, only a few days after she publicly disclosed her cancer had spread to her brain.

In a lengthy statement, he spoke of her love for him and their daughter Madison, 10.

Mel led the judging panel on the Australian version of the show for 12 seasons and also featured as a personality on five series of the UK show on Channel 4.

She previously shared that she would take a break from filming to focus on her family and well-being.

John stepped in to replace her for the remainder of the latest UK series, as filming was underway.
