As a movie lover, I remember those early pandemic days – March 2020 to late 2021 – as a really confusing time for cinema. Studios were scrambling because theaters kept opening and closing with each new wave of COVID-19. So many films that should have been big theater experiences ended up going straight to streaming, and honestly, a lot of them just kind of disappeared. I’m actually surprised to see something like Mark Wahlberg’s 2021 sci-fi thriller getting a second chance on Pluto TV – it’s cool that some of these movies are finding their audience again.
You might not even remember it, but the sci-fi thriller Infinite, directed by Antoine Fuqua, stars Mark Wahlberg as a man troubled by memories of places he’s never been. The story reveals he’s part of a group of people who have been reincarnated for centuries, known as the “Infinites.” While the idea is interesting, the movie didn’t resonate with most audiences, earning a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One viewer, John J, jokingly compared it to a low-budget version of The Matrix.
Featuring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, Toby Jones, and Dylan O’Brien, the film Infinite was originally scheduled for theatrical release in August 2020. However, the pandemic caused delays, and Paramount eventually decided to release it directly on streaming services instead of in cinemas. While it’s not currently available on Paramount+, Infinite is gaining popularity on Pluto TV, where it’s now the seventh most-watched movie. Here’s what the film is about:
Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg) is plagued by strange skills and vivid memories of places he’s never been. Struggling with self-medication and nearing a breaking point, he’s contacted by a mysterious group called ‘Infinites’ who reveal a shocking possibility: his memories aren’t just dreams, but echoes of lives he’s lived before.
Evan is pulled into the world of the Infinites, a group of people who can be reborn with all their memories and centuries of knowledge. He holds vital secrets from his past and must work with them to uncover these memories. They’re in a desperate race against time to stop one of their own, Ejiofor, who believes ending all life is the only way to break the cycle of reincarnation, which he sees as a curse.
‘Infinite’ Was Nominated for Three Golden Raspberry Awards

Paramount+
The movie Infinite, based on D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel The Reincarnationist Papers, was notably bad—so much so that it received three Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture and acting nominations for Mark Wahlberg and Roselyn Cookson. Thankfully, it didn’t win any of them. If you’re considering watching it, just be prepared for a less-than-stellar experience.

Reviewers generally disliked the film Infinite, giving it a low 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Anthony Morris of ScreenHub described it as a mix of The Matrix and the Jason Bourne series, but with an older lead actor. Richard Trenholm of CNET also shared his thoughts.

The villains in Mark Wahlberg’s new action movie, which deals with themes of reincarnation, are trying to end the world because they’re tired of repeating the same experiences. After watching it, I can definitely understand why.
